Bard's Tale 1 - a useful strategy Sent in by MerC One of the Rogues "found" the following documents in a filing cabinet he was researching for his Godfather. The top letter is @+clearly a typist's draft, as the words in ~contrast +were covered in a thick layer of Tippex. They are included here without further comment. To: Grand Archmage Kylearan From: Prefect of Policing c/o Adventurers' Guild Office of the 49th Precinct Main Street Stonework Place Skara Brae Skara Brae My Dear Archie, 37th Daem 1988 @~ My spies tell me +I hear that certain ~right villains members of your Guild have been indulging in what can only be @+described as ~bloody murder +culpable homicide. The ~character @~disc +Inner Circle, of course, ~I turn a blind eye to +is @+properly authorised as a ~doss-house +members' hostelry, but @+from what I understand, your group has ~nicked from somewhere @+also set up a ~very iffy +somewhat dubious "Outer Circle". @+ It is to this other place that ~right wallies @+gullible dupes are removed after ~rave ups +meetings in the @+Guild held especially to ~rob them blind +relieve them of their possessions. @+ At the risk of finding a balrog in my bed, I ~really @~must insist +respectfully suggest that you ensure the practice @+be ~restricted to alternate Thordays +discontinued, unless, @+that is, you'd prefer ~to cut me in +to apply for the appropriate licence ? Yours, Phuzzy Dear Porky, 2nd Irkm 1988 It pains me to think that you'd imagine I'd use a balrog on a novice - you of all beings should know that these days I never need more than the odd basilisk. Magi may be cunning to the point of deviousness, but malevolent to non-Mangar minions we are not. Which brings me to your complaint : I have read between all the lines of the Tomes of Ancient Lore, and of the Volume of Modern Law and can descry no reference to Circles, Outer, Adventurers for the use of. Further, the revels to which you make reference cause harm to no living being. It is merely shades that are consigned to potential oblivion : the characters maintain their places in the Inner Circle and can be recalled at any time. Indeed, I gather that members submit to the process with relish, since they can return to the party in their original condition and persuade the Guildlings to relinquish their borrowed property. Would you not agree that this provides a satisfactory (not to say essential) method of saving valuable time and effort for all but the purest of pure adventurers ? Perhaps members of my Guild may be left to make up their own minds ? Yours, Archie
