Lurking Horror - Infocom - deleted (Text-only) Reviewed by Claire Dyard With the game comes a big package: read the instructions and you'll learn that you are a student at G.U.E. Tech where the suicide rate seems to be quite high. You're warned too that it's better NOT to wander into the tunnels underground. And, a cold night of winter, you go to the computer room to do some work. A hacker is here. Switching on your computer, strange things began to happen: on the screen you can read not your paper but messages about the coming of someone (something?). Then you're thrown in a strange place where people do strange things. Very frightening. You awake and the friendly hacker tries to get your paper back but fails. Examining the hacker and talking to him, you learn that he owns a very special key but to get this key (which is an essential item, as you guess!), you've got to feed the hacker first. And now you can go on exploring and searching but beware: this is an horror story and death is present everywhere...and in some hideous aspects! As usual with Infocom, "The Lurking Horror" is a text-only adventure but who needs graphics with such a fantastic text? The descriptions are so vividly written that you feel you are truly living a nightmare. The problems are well thought, the puzzles very logical and you have plenty of room to explore or actions to perform. Try examining everything: you'll get useful information and it adds to the atmosphere. On your way you will encounter a mad maintenance man, a professor who is an adept of occultism, a strange shape, all of them wanting to kill you ... and don't forget the rats! Not a game for the faint-hearted but truly an adventure to have you glued to your computer for hours. Definitely one of my favourite games. And if you're stuck, SynTax gives you some hints & tips (Issue 1) or even a full solution (Issue 2). PS: I bought this game via "Special Reserve" for œ9.99 (incl. p&p)
