Competition Thanks to everyone to entered last issue's competition - all four of you! It look as though the word puzzles are the ones which appeal to you most of all. So unless anyone has an idea for a different competition, I'll stick with those when I do one. As I said last issue, the story had over 30 titles hidden in it and Neil Shipman found the most with 33. Well done, Neil! One entrant asked if there was an adventure called HERO. Well, I hadn't heard of one at the time, only an arcade game but I said I'd include it if I came across one in the meantime. What should I find just before the closing date - an RPG-type game called HERO II! But even taking that title into account, Neil still had the most. The completed story was (including HERO): Garrett, ONCE A KING but now deposed, dodged NORTH AND SOUTH through the woods, hiding from the SUN, DOGged by his enemies at every turn. Pausing briefly to FISH from an icy stream (it was, after all, MID-WINTER), he continued to HACK his way through the undergrowth. His eyes looked towards the HILLS - FAR to the WEST lay his ULTIMAte goal, THE ADVENTURERs' Inn, where he hoped to rejoin his companions. Finally, in the midst of a storm, dog-tiRED, LIGHTNING crashing around him and soaked to the skin, he arrived at the inn. With a CRASH, GARRETT threw open the door. "A drink, wench, and make it FAST!" "LA! NEver say please!" scolded the barmaid, aS, HER LOCKet swinging, she filled a mug to the BRIM. STONE floors underfoot, covered with rushes, a mouldy STAG's head on the wall and sTARK lights SUSPENDED from the ceiling, only served to emphasise the poor state of the building. But there was something oDD .... STaring around tHE ROm, Garrett noticed a burly man sitting in one corner, eating a piece of meat, possibly PORK, which OOZEd juices onto his plate. It was as though he'd seen a ghost or a figure from MYTH or LEGEND. "Jim? It's you?" asked Garrett, and touching his face, down which ran a long, BLACK SCAR, MOUNTAIN Jim, the famous scout, replied, "Aye, it's me." "Thank god! After that last fight in the pass, I thought you had died, and seeing you there, I thought I was losing my MIND...." "FIGHTERs besieged us, aye," replied Jim, "but we made good our escape. But the worst bit was that narrow pASS, AS, SINce we had to move quietly, it took a lot of TIME ..... and resulted in death, starting with the PRINCE. I SENT IN EL/ITE forces to try to protect him," continued Jim, trying to comfort his master, "but it was too late, as I SUSPECTed. But, never fear, the INFIDEL scUM Shall pay for his death....." ONCE A KING, NORTH AND SOUTH, SUNDOG, FISH, MIDWINTER, HILLSFAR, HACK, WEST, ULTIMA, THE ADVENTURER, RED LIGHTNING, CRASH GARRETT, FAST LANE, SHERLOCK, BRIMSTONE, STAG, TARK, SUSPENDED, DDST, HERO, PORK, OOZE, MYTH, LEGEND, BLACKSCAR MOUNTAIN, MINDFIGHTER, ASSASSIN, TIME, DEATHSTAR, PRINCE, SENTINEL, ELITE, SUSPECT, INFIDEL, UMS As Neil won the competition, I still have the software he donated for it - he won a surprise alternative. I'll keep his games for a future competition. Why? Martyn Westwood of Interactive Technology just contacted me to say he's reducing the price of two of his adventures, Dead End and A Dark Sky Over Paradise to just œ4.99! Originally they were œ7.95 and œ9.95 respectively. He's kindly donated two copies of A Dark Sky Over Paradise for this issue's competition which means we'll have TWO winners this time. The usual rules apply - entries must reach me by 15th December 1990, all the words are in straight lines, up, down, sideways or diagonally, and in the case of a draw, the winners will be drawn from the hat. This time there are 18 PD adventure titles hidden in the shape. Good luck finding them!
