NORTH & SOUTH - Hints Sent in by Henry Rushing For newcomers to the game - when you realise you have trouble with battles in the action mode it's better to play on the Confederate side at the beginning because they are generally stronger at the beginning phase. Absolutely important! At all possible costs try to occupy North Carolina. This is the only state that reinforcements from Europe land (this goes for both armies). It is a good precaution to have one or at the most two armies in the area to help protect North Carolina. If you've decided to add the effect of random Indian attacks then don't keep troops in Iowa or Texas if possible. There is a very high attack rate in these two states. Most of the battles are carried out in the west. Here you will find the most railroad lines. Send the mass of your troops to the west and keep a couple of armies in the east to protect N.C. and attack the opposing side's cities. Successful attacks on cities lower the opponent's income. If, after a battle you realise that your winning army consists of just pitiful survivors, it's a good idea to send them and attack a stronger opposing army. It's obvious that these troops are going on a suicide mission but they're too weak to be of any use protecting anything. They can help to weaken an opposing army substantially. Your surviving troops can do more damage than you imagine. Afterwards you can go in with a fresh army of yours and finish it off easily. You will notice that a typical tactic from the computer in this situation will be to "run like hell".
