Dune (Virgin) - Part 1 Solution by Roy Sims (played on an IBM PC) (i) Stage One - Gurney and the Fremen At the very start of the game you must talk to your father, Duke Leto and then to your mother Jessica who is in the next location. They will ask you to travel to a place called Carthag-Tuek to meet with Gurney Halleck. Take the ornithopter outside of the palace and fly to Carthag-Tuek (the southern most sietch out of the three that are visible on the map). Enter the sietch and talk first to Gurney. He will suggest you try and persuade the Fremen to join forces with you. Talk to the Fremen and ask him to work for you. He will agree. (At this point in the game you can only ask him to mine spice for you. He will see no reason to fight for you yet) The Fremen in the next Sietch northwards won't work for you yet. The third and final sietch will. Again, get him to order his troops to mine spice. Talking to Gurney will hint that you should return to the palace once you have visited all three available sietchs. NB 1: Once you have ordered troops to mine spice, select the modify equipment option and ensure that any harvesters and/or ornithopters are allocated to the miners immediately, otherwise spice production will be slow. If there is no equipment available, they will have to be sent in search of it later on. (ii) Stage Two - Stillsuits One returning to the palace, speak to Duncan Idaho. He will explain his job and emphasise the importance of spice production. Talk to Jessica then speak to the Duke. He will ask you to find out more about the Fremen Stillsuits. Talking to Gurney will tell you that you should return to Carthag-Tuek with him to speak to the Fremen there. Back at Carthag-Tuek the Fremen there will tell you of a maker of stillsuits who is located in a sietch to the east. Fly east with Gurney and he will spot the sietch. Land at Tuono-Tabr and enter. The Fremen inside will tell you more about stillsuits. He will also give you some and promise to send more back to the palace. Two more sietch locations are revealed to the N and E from here. Fly E to Tuono-Tuek and talk to Gurney. He will mention the existence of spice prospectors. Fly N and recruit more Fremen at Carthag-Tabr. NB 2: Each time you enter a new sietch and encounter Fremen you must enlist them to your cause immediately. Nearly all will. Those who won't can be persuaded later once other events have occurred. (iii) Stage Three - Spice Prospectors Fly back to Carthag-Timin. The Fremen who didn't want to work with you earlier are in fact the prospectors. They will now work for you as prospectors. You are given the spice density map which shows all areas of land that you have discovered so far and the density of spice that they contain. NB 3: Every time you find a new sietch or take control of a new area of land you should send the prospectors in. To speed up their travel time between sietchs, get them an ornithopter as soon as possible. Move the prospectors to any of the grey areas indicated on the spice density map so they can work out how rich that area of land is in spice. (iv) Stage Four - The Communications Room and Harah Return to the palace with Gurney. You will see that the promised stillsuits have been delivered. Speak to Duke Leto. He will ask you to search the palace with Jessica. Talk to Jessica then ask her to come with you. You will find the hidden communications room. This is where messages come in and where you can send messages back out. Return to Tuono-Tabr and you will be told of a rich area of spice to the SE. Fly SE with Gurney and discover a new sietch. Inside you will meet with Harah, a female Fremen. Talk to her. She knows of many new sietch locations. Take her with you and visit the new sietchs. You won't be able to persuade the Fremen at Habbanya-Tabr on your initial visit there. After visiting the new sietch you should seek out the prospectors. If they have finished their last task, send them to look at the new areas you have just discovered. Return to the palace on Gurney's advice. (v) Stage Five - The Visions and the Emperor Speak to Duncan and he will tell you about the giant sand worms of Arrakis. Now speak to Jessica. She asks you to go to the desert alone. Ask Gurney and Harah to stay in the palace then leave and walk into the desert for a while. Now wait until either morning or evening (depending on what time of day it is when you get there). You will see your first vision. A message has arrived at the palace! Immediately walk back to the palace. Speak to Jessica and the Duke. Go to the communications room and view the message from the Emperor, Shaddam IV. He will remind you that you are on Arrakis to mine spice and he will ask for a shipment. Go to Duncan and speak to him. He will tell you how much spice you have mined so far. If you have the required amount of spice, accept the request and ask Duncan to go with you to the communications room. You will automatically dispatch the spice and send a message back to the Emperor. He will respond immediately. NB 4: If you don't have enough spice to cover the Emperor's request, argue with Duncan and reach a compromise amount. The Emperor won't be very pleased. If you deliberately send less than he asked for when you could have met the demand, the Emperor will suspect this. Send two low shipments in a row and it will be the death of you! Saudaukar Troops will be sent in and it will be game over. (vi) Stage Six - Thufir Hawat and the Weapons Room Return to Duke Leto and speak to him. You will all gather on the balcony. You will discuss various things. The conversation ends with a question about the whereabouts of Gurney Halleck. Jessica will tell you that you can now communicate with people over short distances by telepathy. Ask Jessica to go with you to search the palace for Gurney. Jessica will detect a hidden room. Within is Gurney who mumbles about a booby trapped door. Ask Jessica to stay with Gurney, then return to the Duke. He will tell you to go to the Communications room and speak to Thufir Hawat. Thufir can disable the trap. Get him to follow you to the new room, and he will disarm the door and make it safe. Speak to Gurney. (vii) Stage Seven - Stilgar Now speak to Thufir again. He will ask you to seek out an important and trusted Fremen leader. Talk to Harah about this. Enter the newly discovered armoury. Leave Gurney there to study the weapons. Travel with Harah to Habbanya-Timin. The Fremen here will tell you about Stilgar, the Fremen leader. Now ask Harah about this and she will tell you to travel W of the palace. Go W from the palace to a sietch called Sihaya-Clam. From here you need to fly NW. (Ask Harah). At Ergsun-Timin you will encounter Stilgar. Speak to him then ask him to come with you. Four more sietchs are revealed by Stilgar. NB 5: With Stilgar by your side you can now recruit Fremen and get them to train in the way of armies. They still won't be training at optimum efficiency though... (viii) Stage Eight - Training armies and the Harkonnen demonstration Take Stilgar back to the palace once you have visited the new Sietchs and introduce him to the Duke. There should be a message waiting for you from the Emperor at this time. Having dealt with the latest demand for spice with Duncan (as normal) speak to Thufir in the communications room. He will tell you that Gurney Halleck can now train the Fremen how to use the weapons. NB 6: Gurney should be taken to any sietch where armies are training, or alternatively they should come to him. This has the additional strategic advantage of pooling your armies together early on in the game, as Gurney can train as many Fremen as space will allow at any sietch. Whilst away from the palace depositing Gurney, you should receive a vision from the palace telling you that something terrible has happened! Return to the palace and view the message from the Baron Vladimir Harkonnen. As a demonstration of his power, the Baron has destroyed a Fremen Sietch. Duke Leto becomes very angry at this news. Talk to Thufir Hawat. Now view the message from the Baron's cousin Feyd-Rautha mocking the Fremen you have allied with. Talk to Thufir again and he will suggest an attack on the Harkonnen fortress from the Ergsun area nearby. Speak to the Duke about this, then talk to Duncan. He will mention the miners need for ornithopters so they can spot a worm on approach before it attacks. He will then mention villages where ornis can be bought from smugglers. Talk to Stilgar about this also. @~To be concluded next issue.
