TIP ON EXTENDING THE LIFE OF PRINTER RIBBONS By "Kedenan" Carefully remove the top cover of your printer ribbon by levering it off with a penknife or nailfile. Make sure in doing so that you do not disturb the ribbon! Then spray the ribbon all over liberally with "WD-40", which you can buy from Halfords or most petrol filling stations. One small can, for œ1.75p, will give many treatments. Place the sprayed ribbon on a window sill for twenty four hours to let the surplus liquid dry off, then place the cover loosely on top of the ribbon and leave for seven days. Then press the top cover back firmly into place and you will then find that it will print better than it did when new! The "WD-40" not only spreads the existing ink throughout the ribbon, but it lubricates the fine pins of a dot matrix printer and prevents them from sticking. When it prints faint for the second time, then send the ribbon away to a firm such as "Aladdink" and this time have it re-inked. Then the next time use "WD-40" again as described above, and so on. "Aladdink" can be found at 4 Hurker Crescent, Eyemouth, Berwickshire, Scotland. TD14 5AP. Telephone 08907 50965. It is best to have four ribbons and send them away three at a time, because the re-inking is cheaper for three or more. You won't have to buy another new ribbon for years!
