Pirate Island - author David Meny (Text adventure, one of three adventures on PD283) Played on a PC by "Kedenan" This adventure is written in basic and must therefore be loaded from BASIC, for which purpose a basic interpreter is provided on the disk for your convenience. In case you don't know how to do this, I will go through it. At the MS-DOS prompt, insert PD283, type BASIC , when it loads type LOAD"PIRATE , when this loads type RUN , and the text to start the adventure will appear on the screen and the rest of the text will remain in memory. You can use the Interpreter to load any Basic Programs, at the prompt just type LOAD"(program) The introduction to the adventure states:- "Well, young pirate! Thar she blows! Thars the old Mobby 'Ick. Your great - oh so great - grandfather named 'er. Well, back to business. You 'ust find thee location by longitude and latitude of the SPOOKY Pirate Island, explore it and bring back the famed Spanish coin supposedly to be thar. Don't try to cross any of me' crew or else. Especiall' don't try to cross me'. You bett'r find the coin before you come back to me' ship or else this' cutlass will be you' last wish! Now yous begin on me' ship 'The Eagle's Nest' and you must locate the island's longitude and latitude from yous' sources and those on me' ship. When yous' reach the island - if yous' do - explore it for the coin and then return its' back to me' ship. Have thar good time! " There is no facility to SAVE and RESTORE the game so be careful with your risky moves. Remember the island is very, very, dangerous! You start asleep, dreaming of valiant pirates who sail the seas in search of new lands laden with most valuable treasure, hidden in most dangerous locations. You dream of adventurous fights between pirates over chests of gold coins from a long time ago. You dream on with the rocking of the ship, which suddenly jerks and awakens you. Have a good look round your cabin and see what you can find! Read your Pirate's Book and check for the correction in the Library on board the Pirate's Ship. Search the Ship from top to bottom and see what you can find what might be useful when you get to the Island. When you are satisfied that you have obtained the correct co-ordinates, knock on the Captain's door and answer his questions. After another wander round the ship the Captain will come and tell you that the ship has arrived at the Island and you can go ashore. Don't touch the "garlic" until after the Captain has given you the bag of silver. Go back to the cook and give him the bag of silver for the garlic. The garlic will be useful and well worth the money when you get to the Island, as it will keep some bats at bay, and so keep you out of harm. You can now proceed ashore in accordance with the Captain's instructions and see what you can find on the Island? But remember it's a very dangerous place. With a bit of luck you will find the gold coin and go back to the ship, when the Captain will welcome you back on board! NOTE. If you get killed at any stage of the game you must start again at the BASIC prompt, because if you accept the offer from the adventure to start again, and have another try, the ship will never get to the Island. So type "N" when asked and LOAD and RUN at the "ok" basic prompt. Type SYSTEM if you wish to return to MS-DOS and try another day! It's a quite good adventure, but a bit of a bind when you can't save and restore again. The PD disk is well worth it, if even only to get a Basic Interpreter and and Basic Programming Disc.
