The Legend of Kyrandia (Westwood Associates) Published by Virgin Games IBM PC solution by Roy Sims (Also available on Amiga) 1. Brandon's home Take the red garnet. Take the saw from under the table. Take the note. Try reading it. Take the apple from the cauldron. Try leaving. Before you can the tree will speak to you. Once the conversation is over, leave. Go back down to ground level. NB 1: Various gems are scattered throughout the land of Kyrandia. Pick them up as and when you find them and have room for them. You will need them later on, some more than once and much later on too. 2. Brynn and the purple rose Go to the temple in the NW corner of the map. Inside you will meet with Brynn. Talk to her and show her the note. After casting a spell she will give it back to you so that you may read it. Brynn will ask you for a purple rose. Leave the temple. On the way catch a tear drop by the pool of tears. Go to the forest altar and collect a purple rose from the nearby bush. Now return to Brynn with it. She will turn it into a silver rose. Take this and go back to the forest altar. When you try dropping the rose nothing will happen! 3. Herman and fixing the altar Find the cave and inside you will meet Herman. The bridge here is broken. Give the saw to Herman and he will go out and start sawing down trees to make planks to repair the bridge. Whilst he is busy sawing go to the sick willow and place the tear drop in the hole on the tree trunk. This will cure the willow and make it well again. Merith will then appear and tell you about the marble he has found. It looks like the missing ornament from the forest altar! Switch walking speed (via the options menu) and chase after him. When you lose him go immediately up and you will be directly behind him. After surprising him you will eventually retrieve the marble. Take it to the altar and place it in the correct position. The altar will glow. Now place the silver rose on the altar and the amulet will appear on your panel. 4. The mended bridge Return to the temple. Brynn has gone! No doubt taken by the evil and vile Malcolm. Return to see how Malcolm is doing repairing the bridge. He should have done it by now. Once in the cave you will ask for your saw back but he doesn't have it to hand and will rush off to get it. Don't worry about waiting for him to return. Just cross the bridge and leave the cave by the other side. 5. Darm and Brandywine You are now in Timbermist Woods. Enter the hut nearby. Here you will find Darm the wizard, and Brandywine the Dragon. Darm needs a Quill to write with. You must explore the new areas made available to you. There are a number of things to do. 6. The Quill and HEALING. Collect the walnut. Go to the Serpent's Grotto and try entering. Malcolm will appear. When he throws a knife at you, take it and throw it back! He will freeze the entrance to the cave. Find the pine cone in the dark forest and take it. Take the fallen acorn from the acorn tree located near to the marble altar. Now go to the Deadwood Glade and drop the pine cone, the walnut and the acorn into the hole. A talking bush plant will grow and give you the first of your amulet's abilities - HEALING (yellow). NB 2: There are 4 abilities waiting to be activated on the Amulet. You won't get all 4 for quite some time. Go to the bird's nest. Stand next to it (to the right of the screen). Activate the healing gem on your amulet and the injured bird will be healed. Take the feather it leaves and return to Darm. He now has his quill! 7. The Marble Altar and birthstones Darm will write out a scroll for you that will aid you more than once in your quest ahead. Take this scroll and leave. Go to the ruby tree and try taking a ruby. You will be bitten by the snake (possibly twice). Whilst still in the location select the healing gem on the amulet to heal yourself (it should have regenerated by now since it was used to heal the bird's injured wing earlier). Go to the Marble Altar nearby. Drop any gems you have collected here. Travel around and see if there are any more. This is the birthstones quest mentioned by Darm earlier. It is difficult to say what order you should put the gems in as it doesn't seem to conform to the usual birthstones people know. However, if you must, base the order on the real birthstones (look in an Argos catalogue if you don't know them or a jewellers) but don't expect them to all conform as you would expect. Don't worry about wasting the gems. Once burnt up in the bowl on the altar you will find them randomly scattered in the land (both this side and the other side of the cave with the mended bridge). Eventually you will have all four gems in their correct places on the front of the altar. The dish/bowl will vanish and in its place will appear some pan pipes. If you play the pipes outside the frozen entrance to the Serpent's Grotto the ice will crack and shatter. 8. Entering the Serpent's Grotto You are about to enter a large labyrinth of dark caverns. You will first enter a cave with natural mineral water. Ignore this. Go right and you will enter a cave with fireberries. Take one. NB 3: Fireberries are your only source of light at this stage. They last four moves only, burning out on completion of the fourth move. There are many such bushes in the caverns and to get through to the other side you must navigate your way to find each bush before the berries extinguish. They will always be exactly four moves away from the previous one, but you have no idea in which direction. Save each time you safely make it to another bush. Map this on paper as you play else you will get hopelessly lost and killed. There are a number of things that must be done within the caverns. (i) Cross the chasm to get to the other side (near the start of the caverns) This cannot be done until you have done (iii). You will have to use the purple gem on the amulet to get across. (ii) Get an iron key (in the very SE corner of the map, beyond the volcanic lava river). This cannot be done until you have done (iii). You will have to use the purple gem on the amulet to locate this area as it is too far away from a fireberry bush to be located otherwise. (Try the very bottom of the SE region of your map of the caverns). To get over the bridge of volcanic lava you must use the scroll that Darm gave you. It will freeze the entire location, allowing you to cross safely. This key is not used until later on. (iii) Solve the mystery of the altar in the Pantheon of Moonlight. You need to have found the gold coin lying on the floor in the Cavern of Twilight and returned to the well outside. Drop the coin in the well and it will fill up with water and give you a moonstone. Place the moonstone in the hole in the altar. The two willo the wisps will activate the second amulet gem - WILLO WISP (Purple). By using the purple gem you can transform into a floating willo wisp that can illuminate any cavern without the use of fireberries and cross the chasm to get to the other side. (iv) Re-open the entrance you came in through (weight mechanism). There are five rocks lying about inside the caverns. Four are needed to balance the scales and re-open the entrance permanently. Brandon will accidentally lose one of them when trying to throw the stones in, which is why you must have all five even though the scales only need four. You will end up at another entrance to the cavern but this time at the back. If you are in the form of a willo the wisp then you will turn back to being human here. Walk across the scenic plateau and into a dark forest. 9. Falling branches and Zanthia Once into the dark forest the branch of a nearby tree will fall off and hit you on the head, knocking you out cold. You will awake inside Zanthia's dwelling. After a conversation she will let slip about you being a prince. She will try and help you but she needs some magic water from the nearby enchanted fountain first. Take the flask and go in search of the fountain. 10. Malcolm and the enchanted fountain You shouldn't have any trouble in finding the fountain. Unfortunately a bored Malcolm is also there. He will sabotage the fountain by stealing one of the crystal balls. The fountain will dry up. You must find the crystal ball if you are to get the magic water Zanthia wants. Go to the SW corner of the dark forest. You will come across a flaming tree. You can't get near it to put out the flames with flasks of water so try standing nearby and reading the scroll Darm gave to you. It will put out the flames. Take the crystal ball and return it to the fountain. Once the enchanted fountain is restored back to normal, fill the flask with magic water and drink it. A blue gem will be added to your amulet. What this gem does is revealed later. Fill the flask again and return it to Zanthia. She will thank you for the water and reveal more about your real parents and their fate. Your mother and father were really the King and Queen, murdered by Malcolm! Zanthia will now ask for some blue berries. If you have already found and picked some try giving them to her. She might say they aren't fresh enough. If she does, eat those you have and go back to the cascading rainbow waterfall and pick some more. Go straight back to Zanthia without deviating. Unfortunately when you return with the fresh berries Zanthia has disappeared! 11. Mixing your own potions Take this chance to look around the place. If you look at the rug you will find a trap door. This leads to another outdoor region. In the strange stump next to the trapdoor covered in grass you will find a rainbow stone. Take this. (You can drop this in the cascading waterfall to reveal a silver statuette of a unicorn which you can take if you like). With Zanthia gone, you must mix your own potions. You don't know the ingredients at the start but experimentation will yield results. Note that any gems you put into the cauldron will be randomly re-displaced in the land nearby. Anyway, you need to create three differently coloured mixtures, namely red, blue and yellow. To do this you need one gem and one plant of the relevant colour. It does not matter what colour is already in the cauldron when you add the new ingredients. blue gem + blue plant will make a blue potion red gem + red plant will make a red potion yellow gem + yellow plant will make a yellow potion The gems are easy enough to pick up as you've seen and used them before. The plants are blue berries (blue), rare orchid (red), and tulip (yellow). Each colour potion must be put into one of the square style flasks. You will need one yellow, two red, and one blue. NB 4: Each time you leave Zanthia's dwelling, a new empty flask is generated. This way you can collect many flasks. Armed with the correct flasks filled with coloured potions, proceed to the giant Crystals of Alchemy which you should have found in your travels. The Crystals have a niche for one flask each. You need to create one purple and one orange potion. Purple = one blue potion flask + one red potion flask Orange = one red potion flask + one yellow potion flask NB 5: You can create a green potion by mixing blue and yellow but this only creates a poison potion which is of no use. If you drink it, you will die instantly, so don't bother. 12. The floating chalice and the Leprechaun Now you have a purple and an orange potion. Now you must go and sort out the floating chalice that you must have seen not that far away from the enchanted fountain. No amount of jumping will get it, but a certain blue gem on your amulet may be able to help. Stand near to the chalice and select the blue gem. The chalice will lower. As it does a small Leprechaun will appear and when it is low enough he will grab the chalice and run off with it! Follow him and you will end up at a tree with a small door. You can try opening the door but to no avail. Before you do the next bit make sure you have the apple from the cauldron in your grandfather's house or an apple from elsewhere. Now stand by the little door and drink the purple potion. You will shrink! Now you can enter through the door. Inside you should talk to the Leprechaun and try and get him to swap the chalice for something he wants. Being very short he wants something he can't normally reach so offer him the juicy apple and he will accept. Go back outside and you will see the chalice lying on the ground next to the tree. Take it. 13. The Lagoon Remember that the whole purpose of making the potions is to make one that will get you across the lake to the castle far away. If you go to the Lagoon (North-most area in the same land area as the Crystals of Alchemy) you will find a platform flanked by two golden horse ornaments on a beach by the lake. Grab a rare red orchid then stand on the platform and drink the orange potion. You will be transformed into a flying white horse which will make the journey across the lake. NB 6: You can try flying over the lake in the form of a willo the wisp (by selecting the purple amulet gem) but you will be swallowed by a large whale half way across! 14. The Island and the Castle You will land on another platform at the end of a winding mountainside path and turn back to your human form. Walk to the misty grave and read the headstone to find your real parents grave! To pay your respects lay the rare orchid on the grave. Your mother's ghost will appear and give you some advice and activate the final (red) amulet gem. Now all four gems are activated! (Yellow, Purple, Blue and Red). Go to the nearby gates of Castle Kyrandia. Do not attempt to examine or do anything near the gates as you will wake up the gargoyles and they will kill you in a second! Instead use the red amulet gem to make you invisible. Now approach the gates and using the key found in the caves unlock the gates and go through into the castle. Once inside you will meet up once again with Malcolm, the evil Jester. Don't forget that you are here to locate the Kyragem and heal it if you can. 15. Royal artefacts and dank dungeon passages There is a lot to do in the castle. Firstly you need to locate a key to a locked set of double doors at the end of the Great hall. Go left at the bottom of the stairs in the entry hall. Go to the study. A large menacing fireplace stands against the back wall. Books line the shelves on either side. Look at the categories on each shelf. Note which ones are where. Make sure all of the books are pushed back in their original positions. Now pull those in order that would spell OPEN. The fireplace will swing around on its own and you can take the crown that sits in the middle. Now you must approach the fireplace. It will swing around and you will find yourself in a network of dark dungeon passages. Follow these simple directions to find the key. When you are blocked by a force field, use the blue gem on the amulet to turn it off and allow you through. From the initial location after leaving the study behind you, go L,L,U,U,L,U,R,U,L. Now examine the stone slab on the floor that is sticking out and you will find a key underneath. Get the key and work your way back to the small study. Find your way to the Kitchen. In here with the rest of the cooking utensils is a royal sceptre. Take it. 16. Bedrooms and Herman's return The key you have will work on the double doors at the end of the great hall but they only do half the job. Now it's time to go upstairs. There are a couple of bedrooms in this castle where you will find Brynn, Darm and Zanthia turned to stone. Your yellow healing gem cannot help them. One room has an ankh, one has a rare fish. However, one room is blocked by a green-looking Herman armed with your saw. He's been taken over by Malcolm. To break the spell you must use the yellow healing gem on him. He will fall asleep. You can now get past him into the room with Zanthia. 17. Bells and portraits Inside you will find four bells and a little hammer. If you hit them in the following sequence the portrait will rise revealing another key. Play the bells thus: Green, White, Yellow then Blue. When the portrait has stopped moving, take the key. 18. The Royal Foyer Use this key on the double doors and they will finally open! Walk through and you will be inside the royal foyer. To the right are the doors leading into the Kyra-vault where the Kyragem rests! But first you must place some royal items on the cushions in the correct order. The order is (from left to right): Sceptre, Crown, Chalice. The doors will open and as they do Malcolm will appear out of nowhere and challenge you! After a bit of pushing and counter- pushing you will end up punching his lights out! Proceed into the Kyra-vault! NB 7: At this late stage you will find that you cannot save your game once inside the vault, so save it BEFORE you place the Chalice on the cushion to open the door. 19. The final fight Once inside the vault quickly use the red gem on the amulet to turn yourself invisible, then walk round to the full length mirror on the right hand side of the room. Malcolm will follow close behind and he won't be very happy! He will fire a spell at you. If you are positioned correctly the spell will hit the mirror and deflect straight back at Malcolm - turning him to stone (or granite)! The Kyragem will be healed! 20. The End The scene will change to...but that would be telling! To know what happens at the very end you'll have to get there and see it for yourself! NB 8: There are a few objects that have no use in the game, including: the ankh, the fish, the silver statuette, and the green potion.
