Don't Despair! is a new page devoted to not only answer any questions on normal text adventure games, but on arcade games too, just so long as it has an adventure theme, this being an adventure mag and all. Humbug Revisited (PC) Dear Bitmap, Thanks for your help. (Well that's okay! - BMK.) After defeating the Slug (Bet it looked gross! - BMK.) I managed to get into grandad's backyard and I uncovered a gap in the ground. (Don't tell me you've damaged the Channel Tunnel...! - BMK.) My question is this: (Yea...?! - BMK.) How do you get into the room without breaking your neck?! (Errr, by being a bit more careful?! - BMK.) And how do you get the swimming cap from the east chamber under grandad's study? (Perhaps you don't, go and buy one from a machine when you get to the swimming centre! - BMK.) Please can you help me. (If you're nice! - BMK.) Niall Dowling, Ireland. Why do I start to get the feeling you've got real problems with Humbug? Anyway, after a few years of research, hard labour, a lot of sweat, blood and anything else you'd care to imagine I have once again, being the cool Kid I am, found the answers to your question. To enter the gap without kicking the proverbial bucket in the process, you must first go down to the cellar and put the mattress from the alcove under the hole. Then when you jump the mattress will break your fall removing that 'orrible old bucket. Now for the cap. You can't get anything from the past, you must be able to get it in the present. Read the slate to get some Roman numerals (MCIV). Have you been paying attention in your history lessons? If so, you'll probably know that they convert to 1104. In the past, put the items you want on the middle table. Then in the present return to the hall and go E, N, D, turn the dial to 1, E, E, turn the dial to 1, W, S, turn the dial to 0, N, N, turn dial to 4, S, press button. The case opens and you can get the cap! BMK. Bitmap Strikes Back with Chaos Strikes Back (ST) Rather an old tip I know but there must be some who haven't heard it. If you want really strong champions, copy MINI.DAT from the Chaos disk to a blank disk. Rename it to CSBGAME.DAT and use it as a saved game as normal. One mega-new thing I've found in CSB is secret passages (guarded) in the champ selection room. There are some good champs there so it's worth finding them. The passages are behind illusionary walls and there are two of them. They can be quite hard to find, either walk into every wall until you find them, or get a CSB PD map disk from the SynTax library. Note: the passages are not shown on all PD maps. ******** To get your question answered or your knowledge shared, all you have to do is scribble down what you want to say and send it to the address below. Please make sure you make it clear what game you are referring to and your machine type (ST/Amiga/PC). Also give as much info on where you are in the game, all of this will give you a better chance of your letter appearing in SynTax. Send your adventure game problems to: The Bitmap Kid, Don't Despair!, SynTax Adventure Magazine, 9 Warwick Road, Sidcup, Kent DA14 6LJ. by mid June if you want your letter to appear in the next edition of SynTax.
