X-Wing: The Official Strategy Guide - œ18.45 Book review by Roy Sims At œ18.45 for a paperback I was hoping that the 420 odd pages of this newly published book for players stuck in X-Wing was going to prove useful. Well, it has! The book makes very interesting reading whether you've played the game or not. All of the missions (both historical and tour of duty) are described individually in the style of a continuing story. Not only does it divulge tactics, but a few minor cheats are detailed as well. In fact, one very useful cheat allowed me to get past the fourth mission of the first tour that has been causing me problems for months. The book is choc a bloc full of screenshots and photographs for each and every mission. There are also behind the scenes interviews with the programmers and lots of other hints and tips. I am now making much better progress in the original 'X-Wing' than I had on my own now that I have read through the required strategies. The book is the best example of a hint or strategy supplement that I've ever seen. At over 420 pages it obviously took a lot of hard work and dedication by the author and all his hard work is very much appreciated. Because X-Wing is the type of game that should be savoured, I will keep going with each mission until I've reached the Death Star, no matter how long it takes. This very detailed book should shorten the length of time required to achieve that goal! For those who are interested, the book is published by Prima Publishing, under their imprint label 'Secrets of the Games'. The same series has published books on 'Falcon 3.0', 'Civilization', 'Gunship 2000' and 'Powermonger' to name just a few. The ISBN is 1-55958-375-4 and the author is Rusel DeMaria (who penned the Farlander papers that came with the X-Wing game itself). The book is available on import and you should find it in any Virgin Game Store or other software outlet that sells hintbooks. Excellent for all X-Wing fans!
