Life After Death - author James Lean Zut Alors! - author Brian K. Asbury (Two text adventures for the Amiga on Disk PD 565) Reviewed by Janice Charnley 1. Life After Death In Life After Death you control two young students of the supernatural, Orrin and Lena. You can swap between characters in order to solve problems, as both have their own levels of strength and ability. You enter the after life in the Zone of Reality, in which various aspects of the real world are simulated. After this you must cross the puzzle-bridge to the Zone of Fantasy, where human fantasies are real, and then on to the Gates of Hell and the end of the game. You start as Lena, with Orrin lying dead on a table. As you explore, you find your electronic notebook which gives details of experiments in your astral projection study - something is wrong with the after life. There is a record of an interview with James McAdams who recently died in hospital, only to come alive an hour later. Once past this part, you are on your way to blowing up a dam then, as the other character, you approach the desert where death-without-warning strikes unless you drink water frequently. This game has a very original and unusual storyline, but I didn't find it easy and quickly got stuck. Also, I should mention that there are quite a few spelling mistakes in the text. 2. Zut Alors! This text adventure has been written by Brian K. Asbury using Hatrack II and needs to be read with a silly French accent e.g. "Zere is also a little alley running to ze northeast.". You play the part of Cyrano Bergerbar, a young blade recently arrived in Paris to seek his fortune. The object of the game is to join the King's Musketeers but, until you reach that point, you must earn some money to pay for bed and board. As Cyrano, I became a reporter for the local newspaper, Le Soleil, and completed my mission of visiting the "entertainer" Gerdja Nickazoff, getting an interview and picture. Rescuing a mugger's victim and a lost dog also brought in a few crowns. After I became a Private with McGinty's Hooligans, I visited such places as Place de Caste, Rue de Gestures and Avenue On; the text is a bit silly without being really funny. Having found a diving suit, I went back to my lodgings to change and was transported to riding in a column of soldiers from Prussia! Then I was suddenly arrested for being naked and found myself in "Ze Magistrates' Court". As I was unable to pay the fine, I was sentenced to ten years 'ard labour on Devil's Island and the game was over. Sorry, but I did not feel inclined to play it again.
