Day Of The Tentacle LucasArts Walkthrough by Anna & Mark Bradshaw The game is done in 4 parts: 1 part for each of the three characters and a final part with all three of them. The characters are spread through time but can swap objects with each other using the Chron-o-John. First section As Bernard, go to the grandfather clock and open it. Climb inside and you will automatically 'rescue' the tentacles. Now watch the next few minutes of story to understand what is going on in the game. Once you have been sent through time, the game splits into 3 parts, 1 for each of the three characters. Note that these sections cannot be completed in isolation. Each character comes across objects which other characters require, which can then be swapped using the Chron-o-John. To give an object from Hoagie to Bernard, for example, move Hoagie to the Chron-o-John and use the object with the toilet. A flushing sound should be heard. Now switch to Bernard, move him to his Chron-o-John and the object should be in the toilet. Pick it up! These instructions show you the character to use to do something with, followed by what they need to do. Because of the nature of the game, you will need to swap quite a few objects between the characters. Bernard: First of all, you need to find Dr Fred's plans for his super battery. They can be found on the board marked 'To do' in the basement next to the Sludge-o-matic. Pick them up and give them to Dr Fred. He will flush them to Hoagie. Hoagie: Walk to the south, then to the right. Talk to Ben Franklin and find out what he is doing. Now walk to the west and up to the inn. Outside there is a mailbox. Open it and take the letter from the box. This is the letter that Bernard will need later in the game. Now enter the inn. Walk to the grandfather clock, open it and go down to the basement. You will find Red Edison here. Talk to him and give him the plans for the super battery. He will tell you what objects need to be found for the battery to be made. Take the left handed mallet which is on Red's bench. Hoagie: Return to the inn entrance and go upstairs. Go into the first room and use the bed to ruffle the bed clothes. Pull the bell cord to the left of the door to summon the maid. When she appears, go outside and steal the soap from her cart. Go into the next room along and talk to the sewing lady. She tells you that any design for a flag is ok as long as you put it on the table. Remember this for later. Hoagie: Now go into the next room along. This is Ben Franklin's room, and he can be found here later in the game. Pick up the wine and leave again. Go up the stairs at the end of the corridor to the next floor. Talk to the horse and see how lovely his teeth are. These will be useful later... Hoagie: Go into the room opposite the horse. You will find Red's sons. When the right handed son puts his mallet down, swap it for the left handed mallet you took from the basement. This causes the statue which the two make to change, allowing Bernard to complete a part of his section later. Next, take the stairs up into the attic. Pick up the pot of red paint, then use the bed closest to the cat to see the cat's reaction. He follows the squeak of the mattress, but does not let you get to his toy. The solution is to use this mattress on the far away bed, which gives you enough time to pick up the mouse and make your escape via the window! Go down the chimney to the main hall where John Hancock, Thomas Jefferson and George Washington are contemplating the American Constitution. Give the wine bottle to Jefferson for his time capsule, then exit via the swinging door in the corner of the room. Hoagie: Pick up the oil and spaghetti from the pantry and go through the next door. Pick up the bucket, open the cabinet and take the brush. Back through to next door and use the bucket on the water pump to fill it. Use the soap on the bucket of water. Go back outside and up to the carriage. Wash the carriage with the soapy water to make it rain. Ben Franklin now hurries past as it's raining. If you follow him up to his room, he explains that he needs a light, waterproof material for his kite before he can do anything more with his experiment. It's now time to swap to Bernard. Move Hoagie to the Chron-o-John. Paint the Kumquat tree red (it's next to the outhouses) and then give Bernard the paint and the letter. Bernard: Go upstairs from the basement. Go through the double doors marked 'Welcome' (the party room). Ignore the clown and the salesman just now. Go through the swing door into the kitchen. Pick up the two coffee pots and the fork and leave through the door you entered by. Go back down to the basement and give Dr Fred some Decaf coffee. He will fall asleep and go upstairs. Bernard: Now go back upstairs from the basement. Pick up the dime from the out of order payphone. Go into the office and pick up the Swiss bankbook. Open the drawer of the desk and take the booboo-b-gone. Pull the portrait the reveal the safe and leave the room. Go upstairs. Bernard: Go into the first room you come across and close the door. Take the keys from the back of the door. Turn on the TV and watch the advert. Now leave the room again. Go into the next room and give the letter to Wayne the depressed inventor. Take the novelty gun and the disappearing ink from the room and go back to the corridor. Bernard: Talk to green and look round his room. Push his speaker over and turn on the stereo. This dislodges a fake barf downstairs which will be useful. Pick up the video tape which is on top of the stereo. Back to the corridor again, and take the stairs to the next floor. Go through the right hand door and talk to weird Ed Edison. Pick up the hamster from its cage. Use Ed's computer if you want to, and you can play the full version of Maniac Mansion! Now use the disappearing ink on Ed's stamp book. He will get very angry and throw it at you. Pick up the dislodged stamp and the book, and give Ed his book back. Bernard: Go through into the room opposite and push Edna out of the room. This will only work if Hoagie has hassled the artists in his section so that the statue is right handed. Now use the video tape in the VCR and look at the screen which shows Dr Fred opening and shutting the safe. Record him opening the safe and play it back at slow speed. This will give you the combination to open the safe in the office. Leave the room and go down to the office. Open the safe and take the contract out. Go out of the room and pick up the fake barf. Go into the party room and use the flag gun with the cigar lighter which is on the table next to the salesman. Then talk to him and get him to give you a cigar. The salesman will try to light the cigar, but since you have swapped the guns he will not be able to! Bernard: We now need to catch the chattering teeth. Open the grating to the left of the fireplace and try to pick up the teeth. They will run away. Now, chase the teeth into the open grating. You will now be able to pick up the teeth. Leave the room into reception, pick up the sign in the window and the flier, and go out of the main door. Bernard: Walk to the right until you find the masked man. Give him the keys and take his crowbar. Go back into the motel and use the crowbar on the gum with the key in it. Use the gum to free the dime. Go upstairs to where the sleeping conventioner is and put both dimes into the FickleFingers coin slot. Pick up the sweater and leave the room. Put the hamster in the ice machine in the corridor and go downstairs. Bernard: Now we need to rescue Dr Fred. Go into the Party room and up the chimney. Climb in through one of the windows and you will see Dr Fred all bound up. Pull the rope that he is tied with to untie him. Go back through the window and use the rope on the pulley on the roof. Go downstairs and outside. Use the rope on Ted (the mummy) to tie it on. Go back up the chimney and pull on the rope. Go back up the chimney and pick up the crank from the flag pole. Now go through the window again and Ted will be in the room with Dr Fred. Use the red paint with Ted to disguise him as Dr Fred and then Use Ted with Dr Fred to make them change places. The IRS man will look into the room and will think Ted is Dr Fred! Now use the rope on Dr Fred and go outside and pull on it again. After this Bernard will take Dr Fred to the basement. Now you need the funnel from the washroom (go through the swing door off the party room, through the next door and the funnel is in the cabinet). Bring that to the basement. Use the funnel on Dr Fred, and then use the regular coffee on the funnel. Fred will wake up in spectacular fashion! Now try to make him sign the contract. He will refuse, but say the following: Bernard: "Oh forget it, I'll get rid of Purple Tentacle myself" Dr Fred: "How?" Bernard: "I guess I can't. Hey, did you join a record club lately?" ... Dr Fred will now willingly sign the contract, believing it to be a cancellation for a record club! Bernard: Nearing the end of this section, we need to go up to the first floor and use the crowbar on the candy machine. This will give you lots of money. Pick it all up and head down to the washroom. Put the sweater into the dryer and put the quarters into it. The machine will start and run for a very long time. Bernard: Now go to the basement and the Chron-o-John. We need to transfer some objects to Hoagie so he can complete his part of the game. These objects are: Textbook Chattering teeth Flier Signed Contract Stamp Help wanted sign Cigar Cigar lighter Swap back to Hoagie to release Laverne as follows: Hoagie: Use the stamp on the signed contract. Go to the mailbox outside the inn and put the letter into it. The Pony Express will whip the letter off in a jiffy. This gives Dr Fred 2 million dollars needed to buy a diamond for the time machine! Hoagie: Go down into the basement now and give the help wanted sign to Red Edison. He will let you take the lab coat which Ben Franklin will need for his experiment. Go into the main hall. Put the flier into the suggestion box to make an amendment to the American Constitution! Having done that, offer the cigar to George Washington. He will accept it and, when the cigar explodes, will lose his teeth. Give him the chattering teeth as a temporary measure and he will chatter away! This causes the other two to build a fire believing the president to be cold! Now, pick up the blanket which John Hancock used to have and go up the stairs. On passing the horse, read to it from the textbook and steal its teeth from the glass of water! Continue upstairs and use the blanket on the chimney. This will fill the main hall with smoke enabling you to get the gold pen. Hoagie: Once Hoagie leaves the main hall of his own accord, go straight back in and talk to George Washington. Use the following Dialogue: Hoagie: "Woah. You're like George Washington" Hoagie: "My name is Hoagie" Hoagie: "Is it true about you and the cherry tree?" Hoagie: "I bet you've lost it..." This releases Laverne from the tree she is stuck in the future! Swap now to Laverne as she needs to get a few objects for Hoagie. Laverne: When you first come across Laverne she is in a prison with a future Edison family. Talk to the tentacle guard and ask to go to the bathroom. Go right from the entrance to the motel and you will find your Chron-o-John. Now lots of object swapping is needed. Move the following objects to the people shown: Bernard Laverne Scalpel Booboo-B-Gone Fork Fake Barf Crank handle Horse's Teeth Spaghetti (wet, soggy noodles) Squeaky mouse toy Can opener Laverne: Staying with Laverne just now, go back into the motel and back into prison. Talk to the tentacle again, saying you don't feel well. You will get to visit Dr Tentacle. He will leave you alone in the medical room. Take the tentacle chart from the wall. Go out of the room and into the main hall. Go through the right hand of the two doors and into the kitchen. Now go through the next door and you will find yourself in the washroom. Open the dryer and take the sweater out of the dryer. It will be somewhat smaller than it was originally, but this is useful for later! Laverne: Get yourself put back into jail and ask to go to the bathroom again. Go to the Chron-o-John and give Hoagie the tentacle chart. Swap to Hoagie again: Hoagie: Having picked up the tentacle chart, go back to the inn, go up to the first floor and into the sewing room (it is the second door on this floor). Give the chart to the Betsy Ross and she will tell you to put it on the table. Now use the tentacle chart with the patterns on the table. As if by magic, a tentacle flag will appear in the future. Swap back to Laverne: Laverne: From the Chron-o-John, go back to prison again. Say you don't feel well to the tentacle again to get out. Go into the main hall and up the chimney. Use the crank handle on the crank box to get the tentacle flag down. Now use the tentacle flag to disguise yourself as a tentacle! Back down the chimney and talk to the tentacle in the main hall. He will give you a name tag for your human! Go outside to the Chron-o-John again. Swap back to Bernard: Bernard: Go up the party room and use the scalpel on Oozo the clown. Pick up his laugh box and head back to the basement. Give the laugh box to Laverne. Swap back to Laverne: Laverne: On your way back to the motel, use the Booboo-b-gone on the bottom of the fence so that the cat rubs along it and gets a white stripe along its back. It then runs and hides on the roof. Use the squeaky toy with the cat to pick it up. Back into the motel, you can now go upstairs. Go into the first room on the first floor. Open the time capsule with the can opener. Take the vinegar out of the capsule and leave the room. Go into the next room along and pick up the roller skates and extension cord. Use the roller skates on the mummy and push the mummy through the door. He then rolls down onto the human contestant bench. Follow him down and use the name tag on him. Laverne: Walk up to the display area on the second floor. Use the horse's dentures, the laugh box and the soggy noodles on the mummy. Then use the fork on the mummy's hair to make it look 'good'! Finally, use the fake barf on Harold (the human with the green hair). This will remove him from the competition, leaving the way clear for the mummy to win. Go right and talk to the judges and ask them to judge each of the three areas of the competition in turn. The mummy will win all three and win: a useless trophy and a certificate for two to dine at the Club Tentacle. Laverne: Leave the mummy's room on the first floor and go downstairs to the main hall. Go into the kennel and give the certificate to the guard tentacle. He will run out happy! Flick the switch to release the humans, who will not move an inch! Now use the cat to vacate the room! The tentacle guard who was watching over the grandfather clock will run after them, clearing the way for you. Go outside to the Chron-o-John first and use the extension cord on the John's plug. Use the extension cord on the window as well, then go back into the motel and up to the first floor. Open the ice box and take out the hamster. Go back down to the main hall and into the kitchen. Use the hamster in the microwave to thaw him! Now use the sweater on the hamster to warm him up. Laverne: Go to the grandfather clock and open it. Go into the clock, down into the basement. Plug the extension cord into the outlet on the hamster generator. Use the hamster on the generator and get punched out! The hamster escapes into the mouse hole. Use the vacuum cleaner on the mouse hole to get the hamster again. Open the hatch in the side of the vacuum cleaner and pick up the dustball which is the hamster. Use the hamster on the generator again to power the Chron-o-John. Go outside to the generator and send the vinegar to Hoagie. Laverne's part of the game is now complete! Swap back to Hoagie: Hoagie: Go out to the Chron-o-John and pick up the vinegar. Go into the inn and down into the basement. Give the oil, gold pen and vinegar to Red Edison and he will make a super battery and put it on his shelf. Take the battery from the shelf and go upstairs to the first floor. Go into the third room (Ben Franklin's room) and give Ben the lab coat. He will turn it into a kite and lead you outside to take part in his experiment. Put the battery into the pocket of the kite and push the kite when Ben tells you to. This will charge up the battery. Pick up the battery as Ben leaves and head back to the Chron-o-John. Plug the John into the battery and you will be ready for the off! Swap back to Bernard: Bernard: Go upstairs to the office and use the phone. Bernard will call and place an order for a diamond. Bernard will pick up the diamond when it is delivered and take it down to Dr Fred. Dr Fred will start up the respective Chron-o-Johns and you will move on to the next part of the game. Now sit back and watch the fun for a while! When the story stops again, you will control all three characters at the same time and you will be in the honeymoon suite yesterday! All three: Go out into the corridor. Walk round the corner and open door number 2. You will then be shrunk by purple tentacle again. You can then run into the second room on this floor and into the mouse hole. This leads into green tentacle's room. Wait until the shrink ray wears off then pick up the bowling ball. When you leave this room, purple tentacle will have disappeared. Go down to the basement to confront the purple guards. Use the bowling ball on the tentacles to clear them out of the way. Purple tentacle will turn up again and shoot you. When the effect wears off again, talk to Purple tentacle and persuade him to shoot Dr Fred instead of you using the following: All three: "Just what is it you have against humans anyway?" All three: "Sound's like that's Dr Fred's fault, really." All three: "Why don't you zap Fred with the ray gun for a change?" And that's it! Now watch the end game sequence. - o -
