@~Two reviews for Revolution Software's latest game, with quite @~different views ... read on and find out why. BENEATH A STEEL SKY - Virgin RRP œ39.99 (Graphic adventure for PC and Amiga) 1. REVIEWED AND COMPLETED BY A DELIRIOUS JOHN MOORE (IT'S BRILLIANT) I ORDERED THIS ADVENTURE BEFORE XMAS AFTER DOING THE DEMO DISK IN ONE OF THE GLOSSIES. WHEN THE LAUNCH WAS DELAYED AGAIN AND AGAIN I WENT OFF THE IDEA A LITTLE BUT ON MARCH 31st IT ARRIVED. SINCE THEN I HAVE BEEN BURNING THE MIDNIGHT OIL IN A FASHION I HAD NOT DONE SINCE MY EARLY DAYS WITH A DRAGON 32 AND THE MOUNTAINS OF KET. (ANYONE REMEMBER IT?) THE GRAPHICS, MUSIC AND SOUND EFFECTS ARE SUPERB. TOWARDS THE END OF THE GAME IT SOUNDS AND FEELS LIKE YOU ARE IN THE ALIEN MOVIE. SOME PARTS OF THE GAME ARE INTUITIVE AND SOME ARE DA***D HARD. APART FROM THE INTERACTION WITH THE OTHER CHARACTERS YOU GO INSIDE THE COMPUTER IN A VIRTUAL REALITY OF THE SYSTEM AND HAVE TO SOLVE SOME VERY TRICKY PUZZLES THE GAME IS SET IN A GLOOMY FUTURE WHERE CORPORATE LAW RULES AND EVERYONE IS CONTROLLED BY THE CENTRAL L.I.N.C COMPUTER. EVERYONE, THAT IS, EXCEPT THE VERY RICH. THE OBJECT IS TO FIND OUT WHO YOU ARE AND WHY DOES L.I.N.C WANT YOU, AS YOU WERE BROUGHT UP IN THE "GAP", A WILDERNESS AREA OUTSIDE THE CITY SINCE YOU WERE FOUND THERE AS A SMALL BOY. A SECURITY SQUAD SLAUGHTER YOUR FOSTER TRIBE AND TAKE YOU INTO THE CITY WHERE THE CHOPPER CRASHES AND YOU ESCAPE. AS USUAL THESE DAYS THE INTERFACE IS POINT AND SELECT CONVERSATIONS WITH THE MOUSE BUT AS THE LAST YEAR OR SO HAS SEEN NOTHING ELSE IT SAVES THE TWO FINGERED TYPISTS LIKE MYSELF A LOT OF KEYBOARD ACTIVITY. MIND YOU MY KEYBOARD IS RUINED SINCE I COMPLETED ALONE IN THE DARK ONE AND TWO. THERE HAVE BEEN VERY FEW GAMES THAT I DID NOT WANT TO END AND THIS IS ONE. ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL GAME. THANK YOU, VIRGIN, FOR AT LAST RELEASING IT. MUST STOP NOW, I THINK I WILL RUN THROUGH IT ONE MORE TIME. ------------------------------------------------------------------ BENEATH THE STEEL SKY Ancient Amiga Users warning by Brian Burke Coming on 15 discs this was the largest game I've seen on the Amiga since Willy Beamish and as I loaded it onto my Hard Drive I looked forward to a graphical feast. Installing took some time but the Revolution Software logo failed to appear as the manual promised. Undaunted and thinking this was the game's first puzzle I accessed the CLI and ran the game from the SteelSky directory. Nothing in the manual about that I'm afraid. The game itself flows smoothly enough but for me it became a nightmare. I have a 1meg Amiga enhanced by 2meg more on my HD Controller board but I ran into software crashes time and time again. Once a game was restored it was a matter of minutes before the whole thing either locked up or just disappeared into Guruland. Thinking it was TSRs remaining after a restoration I reloaded the game and played for 3hrs solid to regain my former position. I'd just donned the protective overalls in the pipe factory and tried to go left to the storeroom when the game hung again. This time I'd had enough. Back in the disk box it goes. It's a shame as it's a good game, nice graphics, good humour etc but unless you're prepared to play from floppy or have an Amiga 1200 I'd recommend that you save your money and keep your sanity and leave well alone. - o -
