What You See Is What You Get - A text adventure without text (Author Jean Childs, ST only) A review by "Shebo" After playing WYSIWYG for ten minutes I was hooked. At first, the thought of playing a game that had no text didn't appeal to me at all. I imagined it to be a little like the 'point and click' games, most of which I think can be boring. After a while I discovered that the aim of the game was to 'restore colour to the castle'. Well, I thought I was about to play a game that was meant for young children. WRONG - it was MAGIC! True, the aim was to restore colour to a castle (colour that had been taken away by a nasty wizard) - sounds simple, doesn't it? NOT TRUE. What you get is a picture of the locations. What you don't get are long, drawn-out descriptions. Most of what you see is relevant so you mustn't overlook anything. You can examine practically everything and the descriptions are well written and, in a lot of cases, funny. As the game revolves around pictures the graphics are, naturally, of great importance. Jean has managed this aspect of the game very well. The graphics, while being functional and (for some) basic, are clear and concise - doing their job well. Because there is no text YOU are responsible for finding things out - no written clues, you're on your own. You must be very inquisitive and you must not ignore anything - not even the shadows! There are lots of colourful characters to examine, question and have a chat to and the responses are thought provoking and witty. There are many puzzles in the game - you'll need a lot of common sense. Every time you solve a puzzle you are awarded with points. Although this is a small game it seems to last longer than most text games of this size because you don't get much help, apart from the pictures - it's up to you. I think that all adventurers should get this game and give it a go. It's different and refreshing. My only criticism is that the game was not long enough. Jean Childs, the author, has written a unique and delightful game and I hope she continues down this avenue and writes more games in the same style of WYSIWYG.
