DARKNESS FALLS (3D Construction Kit game for Amiga only on PD 513) Played on Amiga 500 by David Charnley Darkness Falls is a sci-fi game set in future deep space. A nuclear station is about to begin meltdown, and there is only one within range who can save the planet. Guess who? The player heads as fast as his warp drive will carry him in his nippy space patrol craft to the station, in order to replace a uranium rod, avert meltdown and generally cheer everybody up. The game features on-disk documentation which sufficiently explains the plot and the controls. It is presented in a pleasing slideshow form, rather than basic text files. I think it important to mention, before I go any further, that this game has been created through the 3-D Construction Kit. Those of you who particularly enjoy 3-D world adventures may wish to seek it out. Darkness Falls, as I say, displays the world around the player in a 3-D window, with on-screen push buttons around the window for selecting actions. I found the game to be quite slow and jerky. Perhaps the main criticism was that there was no obvious path to be followed. Call me useless, but the amount of actions I could perform was severely limited. The sound is fairly atmospheric: ominous sounds of breathing (akin to that of Darth Vader) accompany a creepy soundtrack. The 3-D graphics are fairly reasonable though not exactly stunning. On the whole, Darkness Falls is a game for fans of the genre. Others may find it slow, ugly and frustrating. It will yield little reward for the common adventurer. - o -
