One of the best things to buy on the first level is a holovision.
It lets you see through the fake walls which more than pays for
its cost as lots of them hide piles of gold.

Another good thing to buy is a mine sweeper as more gold is often
blocked by mines. A severed hand is very useful. If you take it to
a shop, you can use it to buy anything, even if you have no gold.
