ULTIMA UNDERWORLD II - LABYRINTH OF WORLDS - Part Four Solution by Hazel Bradshaw @~Relevant maps for this section have been put in the SynWin HDD @~Screenshots section, plus a few earlier ones that apply to the @~first few sections of this solution (before SynWin Screenshots @~existed!) ... Sue @~Continued from Issue 39 THE PITS OF CARNAGE Feeling a bit short of combat? Time to sharpen your weapon - there is as much or as little combat as you want here. Three big levels and one very important NPC - Zoranthus, the mage mentioned in Bishop's letter. Level 1 The combat level. Four big arenas and a lot of unhappy warriors. Krilner will set the scene for you - you must win a few fights to prove yourself, then you can stop if you want to but there are a lot of points to be won by carrying on either until you have had enough, or until the warriors ask your pardon for refusing! When you are challenged, you can pick the arena - earth, water, air or fire, in that order of difficulty. Once the conversation is finished, you are pitched straight into the arena, so be ready! (1) Krilner - just fight the poor chap with your bare fists, he will soon surrender and set the scene for you. Use all the conversation lines here - you can get a lot of information. *Find a magical longsword of major accuracy just north of Krilner's place *It is a good idea to map out the level before speaking to any warriors - they won't accost you if you don't get too close. In particular, have a look into the arenas. (2) Jospur - fight promoter. Listen but don't do business! (3) IAF spell for frost (4) Zogith - talk to him until you can say "Perhaps I can help", then give him the extra Flam rune and learn QAC for valour. (5) A pole, if you need one (6) Dorstag will tell you this is the Guardian's special place of power (7) Scroll of reveal (8) Dorstag. Ask him about everything but not about his scar! Don't challenge him - you will lose. He has the blackrock gem. (9) Zaria - mage. Click on the Flam rune outside her quarters. Zaria will quickly take offence and if you want to fight her, insult her and she will challenge you. If you challenge her, she will choose the Arena of Air and you are dead - she is a powerful mage! In her quarters find a wand of magic arrow, yellow potion, still more Basilisk Oil and D and P stones. There is a secret door in her quarters which is a useful shortcut. (10) Wand of fireball When you have had enough fighting, you will have some skill points and it might be a good time to get some training. You will be some time on the lower levels and will earn lots more skill points there. (11) Find a magical small wooden shield of Additional Protection and go down the stairs to level 2. Level 2 (1) Doric's grave. Mace of Major Damage (2) Ruby, wand of daylight (3) Several headless (4) Through a secret door is an earth golem. Use your wand of cause fear and he will move back while you pick the lock on the chest and find R, J and G stones, a goblet, ruby, potions of regain mana and speed and a jewelled tower shield. You can kill the golem (more than 200 points) but stand well clear and use wands of fireball, magic arrow, etc. - he can kill you with a single blow. (5) Gazers. Jewelled axe (6) Wolf spiders and a useful wand of mending (7) Secret door - gems *The moving floor is easy - watch it for a moment (8) Pentagram, A, K and M runes, try them out and find a marvellous spell - KAM for create monster. (9) A buttons-and-doors puzzle. Amazingly, all you need to do here is press one button and you're through! As you enter the area going east, ignore the portcullis and button you see ahead and instead turn right through the open portcullis. Turn left and press the button and walk (starting to the south) through the open portculli until you come out. On the way back press the same button. (10) Zoranthus. It is very important to write down all he tells you about Djinn entrapment. He gives you a quest - get the Sceptre he wants and he will give you a Djinn bottle. (11) Read the book about monsters and the one about potions (a bit late!) (12) Hordling *Optional extra! Before you take the stairs down to level 3, you could put your moonstone on the floor and Gate Travel back to the gem to get your wands of name enchantment and fireball recharged and buy a potion of restore mana or anything else you need. You could also get some training from Altara, Ogri and (if applicable) Lobar. You could drop any wands that are duplicated or you don't feel you need beside the big gem to pick up later, as they are very heavy to carry. Then move your big gem moonstone just inside the entrance to the Pits and gate travel back to level 2 (remembering to pick up your moonstone as you arrive). So, stronger and lighter, you are ready to explore level 3. Level 3 Don't rush this level - there are secret doors and lots of monsters. (1) Secret door - save here then use EY (if you need more than one, restore and try again). Cast fireshield before going in - there are hostile ghosts, skeletons and a great big liche (use wand of smite undead). Find a wand of bleeding, scroll of reveal, H and F stones. (2) Reapers - use fireballs (3) Magical emerald of restore mana (6) Headless (5) Dire reaper - keep well back and use fireballs (6) Some large boulders block the path - use your rock hammer. Jump up and find a Vas stone under a skull, a magical cap of missile protect (worth wearing) and a very useful sack containing a scroll of heal, magical chain gauntlets of major toughness (wear them), purple potion, 20 coins and a wand of 29 magic arrows. (7) Jump up before you reach the arrow and look through either portcullis and see a switch and a lever. Using your pole (or OPY) open the portcullis and find a worn battle axe of great accuracy (could be mended), a sceptre and 37 coins. (8) Button - press to find an orb, in which you see a room you haven't been in. The decor matches the liche place - go back there and look for a secret door. (9) You don't find one, so use your scroll of reveal and the wall opens to the east. Disappointing - more reference to dream spice and 3 more pots of Basilisk Oil. (10) Reaper, coins (11) Blog House and Rocks. Meet Blog - his friendship will be important to you. (If you are carrying a grey rock, put it on your barter shelf and make his day!) Get a black rock and a white rock and play his game - let him win of course. Tell him about the blackrock gem you seek and Dorstag. *That is all you can do in the Pits, except for getting the gem, so go up to confront Dorstag. Float down from the big bridge on level 2 to save a long walk. *Go in bravely and speak to Dorstag - surprise! The gem is yours for the asking. There is a secret door in the north wall here - EY to open. Very useful wand of cure poison, scroll of fireball. Some weapons - use the axe to smash open the chest and find 24 coins and some gems. The real prize here is a cudgel of entry, which you should always carry. When used in your weapon hand it opens the lock of any door with just one touch (it doesn't work on chests). *You are finished here for now, so go to the north room (6) and use Altara's rod. 5 lines cut, 3 to go. *Perhaps visit Merzan with all that booty - recharge wands or buy restore mana or heal potions. *Go back to Miranda to report - remember that you now have the key to the armoury on level 2, so have a look on your way up. Back at Castle British Miranda sends you to Nelson who is excited about some discovery he has made. When you go into his room, Patterson is there and murder is done. You seem to have no alternative but to kill Patterson (I tried backing off and leaving him to the guards, but everyone I spoke to accepted the fact that I had killed him, so obviously it is the right thing to do) *Take the new gem to Nystul to warm and trade in all those skill points. *Back at the big gem, use the warmed gem on the Pits facet. (6 down, 2 to go) Line up ready for the next world and save as usual. @~More next issue - o -
