WINDOWS 95, A Few Tips From Alex van Kaam It is a good idea to also add your soundcard lines to the Dosstart.bat file, this way your soundcard will be reset once you're back in DOS. Sometimes Windows can have changed stuff on your card (like the volume or CD music input) and you will have very soft sound in a game, resetting your card like this will prevent that problem. There is also a way from preventing Windows 95 from starting up automatically. Doing the following is at your own risk!!!! Shut down to DOS Type >Attrib -s -h -r msdos.sys Type >Edit msdos.sys Change 'BOOTGUI=1' to 'BOOTGUI=0', be sure to overwrite the line and not to add any extra characters, even not a space Save the file Type>Attrib +s +h +r msdos.sys If you have done this correctly you will be returned to the DOS prompt as soon as your Autoexec.bat file is loaded. Also try different things when you try to load a DOS game, I could not load Stonekeep through the task bar or from the desktop and not leaving Windows 95, each time I got an out of memory error and was returned to Windows 95. If however I ran ran Stonekeep using the Explorer (file manager) it ran beautifully. Check to see if Windows 95 has set the speed of your CD-ROM right: Press 'Start' ----> 'Settings' ----> 'Control Panel' ----> 'System' ----> 'Performance' ----> 'File system' ----> 'CD-ROM' select the right speed and select 'OK' Use the right mouse key, it brings up a lot of new options. Try getting the powertoys file, it has several utilities that are very handy. They are made by the Windows 95 team so they fit in perfectly. - o -
