CRYPT - Author: Steve Herring A Text Adventure on SynTax disk PD 520 Solution by Bev Truter on PC Starting at an open gate near a path leading eastwards to the church go E-E-E-E-N to the North Transept, where you see a marble bust with an engraved tablet below, claiming that Sir Robert Wallop was saved when he uttered the name of the church's patron Saint. S-E-N-N to the Vicar's Office, where you find the Vicar fast asleep in his chair. Wake Vicar, and he tells you a bit about the history of St. Hubert's. W-S-W-S to the South Transept, with some graffiti on the wall - "A is one of 4". S-E, get FLORIN. S-W-S-W-N-W-N - get ladder. S-S - a strange inscription on one of the stones reads "D is one of 6". S-E-S, get HALFCROWN. N-W-N-N- E-S-E-S-S-E-N, and you fall into an open grave with steep sides. Drop ladder, get skull. U-W-N-N-N-E-N-W-N-N-E to the apse with an altar. Drop florin and halfcrown. Get candle and matchbox - there are 10 matches in the matchbox, and each time the candle gets blown out down in the Crypt, you must re-light it. S-D-N-S to a side chamber of the crypt. Get GOBLET, W, open sarcophagus. Enter-D-N-E to a large Roman arena, where a shaggy lion charges at you from the eastern tunnel. Drop skull, and the lion grabs it and disappears. E-E to a Private Chamber, get SCEPTER (and note the spelling of sceptre!). W-W-W-W-W to the Cicero Chamber, where a gust of wind blows out your candle. South, light candle to reveal a colonnaded room. Someone has marked in charcoal on the floor "O is two of 6". Get IDOL, then go N-E to the ante-room and light the candle again. E-S-Up-Exit-E-N-N-W to another side chamber in the crypt. Open sarcophagus then Enter - you are in a Tomb Chamber with "L is one of 6" scrawled on a marble wall. The stone sarcophagus lid slides back into place, and you are trapped, the air getting stale.... Type "Hubert", and you are magically transported to the North Transept. Drop scepter and idol. S-E-S-D-N-S-W-W-W-N-N to another side chamber. Open sarcophagus. Enter, then down to a low passage where you find a rat trapped in a cage. Get cage. Try going East, and the Green Knight throws you out of the Round Table chamber. Go South to Merlin's Chamber, and a black cat sitting on a ledge immediately springs down and gets into the cage, devouring the rat and trapping itself in the cage. Drop cage, and fill goblet with potion. Drink potion - you rapidly feel yourself shrinking into a small mouse, and all your possessions fall to the floor. (As a mouse you can see in the dark, so luckily you don't need the candle and matchbox for the next bit). N-E to the Round Table chamber, where the Green Knight doesn't notice you in rodent form. East to the Green Chapel, where you see an iron key on a thong, and a Celtic CRUCIFIX. Get key, W-W-N to a narrow hall with a locked door to the East. Drop key. S-S, and in re-entering Merlin's Chamber you revert to your normal size and form. Get all (you can't see in the dark if the candle has blown out), so if this happens, answer "yes" to the "do you want to grope around?" question. Light candle, N-N, and take note of "R is one of 4". Get key and unlock door - it swings open on rusty hinges. Drop key, go East to the Knights' Locker room, where you see Sir Gawain's magic girdle neatly folded. Get GIRDLE, and a feeling of power surges through you. W-S-E to the Round Table room, the Green Knight sees your girdle and stands at attention. East to the Green Chapel, then get CRUCIFIX, W-W-U-Exit-S-S-E-E-E- N-E-U-N to the altar. Drop the goblet and crucifix, then go S-D-N-N to another side chamber. Carrying the girdle makes you stronger than normal, so open sarcophagus, then enter - another Tomb Chamber, where you see a gold reliquary. Get RELIQUARY, Exit-S-E-U-N to altar. Drop reliquary. S-D-N-S-W-W where you can open the sarcophagus now, but a horde of spiders will start chewing up the girdle and slowly kill you. "B is one of 6" is scratched into the floor here. West, open the sarcophagus and Enter. You fall down to a bed of straw in an E/W Corridor. Get SHILLING, and go East to a Western portal overlooking a maze of ramps and platforms, with another portal visible at the other side. E-E-E-N-E - "Y is one of 6 and 4" is written here. W-W - someone has carved "M is one of 4" into the floor. N-N-E-E-S-E to the East portal, then E to the East end of the corridor, where you see a hole in the roof occupied by spiders. There is an open drain in the floor, though, so get SIXPENCE and Down - you slide down a drain pipe and land on a polished floor in the dark, as your candle has blown out yet again. Light candle, and you discover you have fallen through to the Green Chapel. W-W-U-Exit-S-S-E-E-E-N-E-U-N to altar. Drop girdle, get florin. (You need the florin, shilling and sixpence for the next bit). S-D-N-S-W-W-W-N-N-E. Open sarcophagus and Enter - you are on a stone platform. D-D to the Stone Quay, where the Boatman demands three and six. Drop shilling, drop sixpence, drop florin. The Boatman rows you across the water and through an opening to Traitors' Gate at the other side, where you find yourself on a landing. Up to a Fortress, where the portcullis is closed, and a voice asks "who goes there?" The 10 letters you found were ARYM DLOOBY, so hastily rearranging them, you come up with the answer "Bloody Mary". The portcullis is raised. Go N-W to a Junction of Corridors, where you see the Great Seal of England. Get SEAL, N-S-U, drop seal. D-E-W-E-S to an octagonal room where the Royal Treasures are kept - a medieval crown, a royal staff, and a Plantagenet orb. Get CROWN, STAFF and ORB. N-W-S-E-U, drop crown. D-D to the Dungeon. Get NECKLACE. As soon as you get the necklace, you hear the sounds of footsteps approaching, and if you linger too long the guard will find you. U-U to the platform, pull lever. A metal grating slides across the opening below, preventing the guard from coming up after you. At the same time you hear the sound of a stone slab moving above your head... Exit, and you are now at the only sarcophagus you couldn't open, South of the Crypt Entrance. N-E-U-N. Drop orb, staff and necklace. S-D-N-S-Enter - stone platform with lever. Get crown and seal, then Exit-N-E-U-N. Drop the seal and crown. As soon as all 12 treasures have been dropped in the church above the crypt, you slump over in a deep and profound sleep. You wake up some time later, alert and refreshed, in the Vicar's office. Go W-S-S-D to the bottom of the spiral staircase - you see a warm, bright light coming from the crypt to the North. Go North, and you enter a transformed Crypt, with all the treasures you found restored to their proper place in a large display case on each sarcophagus. Congratulations, you have scored 300/300. - o -
