FTPing An article from Alex van Kaam On Sue's Comment About FTP sites..... FTP programs these days are mostly used to upload WWW pages from your PC to a Server. And a FTP program like WS_FTP LE ( http://www.ipswitch.com ) is nothing else then a program that shows you the directory on your PC (on the left side) and the Remote Computer (on the right side), like using the old Program Manager you go through directories (on both sides) and find the file you want to transfer or retrieve, then you select it and click the arrow pointing to the right to upload it or the arrow pointing to the left to download that file. However, if you are only interested in downloading from an FTP site then you can also use your browser (IE 3.0) Just type in as address ftp://ftp. and IE will log onto this FTP site and show you the directory tree and any files in there. Of course using your browser only works with FTP sites that do not require a password or ID, some sites require your e-mail address as password, so for those sites you still need a decent FTP program. Hope this explains it a bit, for the normal user who just wants to log on now and then to an FTP side using the browser will do just fine. Some good FTP sites: Microsoft Seattle: This one hold more updates and patches you can ever imagine, go into SOFTLIB for find an INDEX.TXT list and into MSLFILES to start downloading what you want/need, give it some time because this directory is huuuuge. For your Web browser: ftp://ftp.microsoft.com For your FTP program: ftp.microsoft.com User ID: anonymous Password: your e-mail address Microsoft UK: Lots faster if you live there or closer to the UK, This one does not hold many updates or patches but has a very nice MSDOWNLOAD directory with the latest version of programs (IE 3.01, Frontpage 97 beta, Direct X etc. etc). For your Web browser: ftp://ftp.microsoft.co.uk For your FTP program: ftp.microsoft.co.uk User ID: anonymous Password: your e-mail address Midifarm: Holds loads of Midis, check out the PUB (public) area, there is also a WWW page. For your Web browser: ftp://ftp.midifarm.com http://www.midifarm.com For your FTP program: ftp.midifarm.com User ID: anonymous Password: your e-mail address Hope this gets you started :o) @~I've only ever used my web brower and had enough problems with @~that in the early days ... I think I'll stick to downloading @~only! ... Sue - o -
