Letters @~Any letters or emails received on an adventuring-related topic @~may be reprinted in here unless marked 'not for publication'. ------------------------------------------------------------------ alex@msn.com, @~First, part of an email from: Bev Truter, Glen Huntly, Australia SynTax arrived Tuesday, and it was up to the usual high standards! Loved the article on maps from Mary Scott-Parker - it's so nice to see there's at least one other person out there who enjoys mapping; and seeing the sheer quantity of locations to be mapped in RPGs (6000+ rooms in Captive!!!) is mind-boggling. I wonder how many shelves of Captive maps she's got stored away? And the different kinds of doors, all of which have to be unlocked, dealt with, passed in some way or other....to think I used to be amazed at the size of Level 9 games, where it was considered HUGE if there were more than 200 locations. Loved the unwashed bowl anecdote too - sounds familiar...I once "lost" a whole cupboardful of crockery and cutlery for a week - it was all sitting (washed) in the dishwasher, and I was so engrossed in a game that I never bothered to unpack it until we were down to the same 4 plates, knives, etc., and I was washing them by hand at the last minute every night before tea....suddenly remembered all the stuff in the dishwasher. @~One of Mary's Captive maps is reproduced in this issue. Has @~anyone else got any more anecdotes of losing washing up - or @~anything else - due to being engrossed in a game? When I used to @~play GODS, I used to hold complete, sensible conversations with @~Alan that I remembered nothing about afterwards because I was @~concentrating on what was happening on-line! Oops ... Sue ------------------------------------------------------------------ @~Next one from an ST reader... From Claire Dyard, Montigny sur Vence, France I'm very happy to see so many games released for the ST and I'd like to know if there are still Atari owners who read SynTax. I installed all issues of the mag on my Falcon disk, with a modified version of NOSHOT.PRG. It runs faster this way. @~I am glad that you are finding enough of interest for the ST in @~SynTax. I feel very guilty that there isn’t more, but as you @~know almost the only programs being released for it are PD or @~shareware. At least we can now convert the Inform and TADS @~games for the ST and some of those are really good. There are @~only about 8 ST readers now, and I lose probably 1 every other @~month so fairly soon there won’t be many left but I will keep @~producing an ST version as long as at least 1 person wants it. ----------------------------------------------------------------- @~And finally a thank-you emailed from: Richard Hewison, Luton I'd just like to thank those individuals who contacted me after my plea in the last issue of SynTax for a replacement keyboard membrane for my Sinclair Spectrum + 128k. James Grieve Johnston came to the rescue and we learnt that a 48k + membrane is identical to the 128k and can be transplanted without any problems. I now have a working 128k Spectrum which responds to the keyboard once again! - o -
