DAGGERFALL - In Hindsight - Part 2 From Brian Burke Continued from Issue 48 GUILD/ TEMPLE PROMOTIONS To advance in each Temple/Guild requires a mixture of skill attainment and earned Reputation points. Each successful quest yields +5 Reputation. The chart below is taken from the Daggerfall Chronicles. You can advance quicker than the chart indicates by virtue of doing more quests and increasing reputation. Thus you can be an Archmage with your maximum points at 86 instead of 94. Each successfully completed quest earns you 5 points, so there's no need to go bananas doing too many. I read that you lose 1 point per each game month or quarter year and 2 points if you fail a quest, so you need to keep topping up now and again. There's no penalty for refusing (allegedly) Temple & Guild quests but NEVER turn down a Royal quest. Don't do royal quests until at least Level 5. You need to be Level 15+ to finish the game. GUILD MIN MIN HIGHEST MIN 2nd RANK REPUTATION SKILL HIGH SKILL 0 0 22 4 1 10 30 8 2 20 38 12 3 30 46 16 4 40 54 20 5 50 62 24 6 60 70 28 7 70 78 32 8 80 86 36 9 90 94 40 Each rank attained gives increased benefits within each guild. These are explained as you are promoted so it's as well to take note. A game month needs to pass by before promotions take place. So once you've done what you deem to be your quota, quest for someone else then pop back in. Herewith the skills in the Temples I've recommended with my suggested top 2 skills shown within quotes - MAGE FIGHTERS ARKAY Alteration Archery Axe "Destruction" Axe Backstabbing Illusion Blunt Weapon Daedric Mysticism Giantish "Destruction" Restoration "Long Blade" Medical "Thaumaturgy" Mysticism Restoration "Short Blade" "Short Blade" DIBELLA STENDARR ZEN Backstabbing Archery Blunt Weapon Climbing Backstabbing Centurion Lockpicking Climbing Daedric Pickpocket Critical Strike Giantish "Short Blade" Daedric Harpy "Stealth" "Destruction" "Mercantile" Streetwise "Short Blade" Orcish Stealth Pickpocket Spriggen Streetwise "Thaumaturgy" In order to join more than one Temple you'll need to play the game without whatever the latest patch (1.06.200 as I write, with one more to come I believe) is, that is until you've signed up in them all, (just ask any citizen where they are) and then install it. You shouldn't encounter any game bugs in the Privateer's Hold, or when you first whiz around Daggerfall town or province. A friend of mine, David Booth, has written an Excel spreadsheet to help determine where you should be. If you're below in rank what the program suggests then you need to quest in that Temple to build up your Reputation. The spreadsheet also allows you to record your game, skill and spell stats. The skill stats are essential as they drive the calculation for the ranks. I'll be sending a copy to Sue. I think on replay the whole game could be played quicker with Temple advancement being done between main quests. THIEVES GUILD & DARK BROTHERHOOD To join the former you need to pick pockets, this can be achieved by selecting 'steal' mode in the Privateer's Hold (opening dungeon) when taking things from the Archer in the room with the L shaped table. The invite will come in the form of a note consisting of two or three words, the first is the name of the person to contact and the last the name of the town you need to travel to to find them. You have 90 days or so to make contact. You are then given an object to procure. To join the Dark Brotherhood you need to slay a number of citizens and guards. If you're of this bent then try 6 of one and a dozen of the other - you swine! When doing Mage Guild 'fetch research' quests you are frequently invited to drop that research into the DB, they'll give you a substitute to fool the Mage Guild. You can ignore the note, when you deliver to the rightful owner the DB note disappears from your inventory. THE ITEM MAKER Once you're able to access the Item Maker in the Mage Guild (Level 5 Enchanter) you can make life much easier. First buy a soul gem, then, when fighting say a Ghost, cast the Soul Trap spell (you'll get a message saying whether you've been successful or not) then kill the beast. Toddle off to the Mage Guild and go see the man with the anvil. Select 'make item' for enchantment. Choose things you're going to wear or fight with. Add things like 'Repair Objects' to two or three things for a cumulative effect. Add 'Increased Weight allowance 50%' to carry more, this is NOT a cumulative effect, as Repair Objects is, so just use it the once. Make all things 'Feather Weight'. 'Strengthens Armour' is another good one. You can also increase the amount of Spell Points available. If you over select then you can balance the points by adding 'Bad Reputation with Underworld' as many times as you need to. I haven't but know a friend who has. He also swears by 'Spell Absorption', a view with which I concur. Makes dealing with Lich a lot easier as, when you use points casting Spell Reflection, your spellpoints are replenished by them throwing spells at you. It's also a cumulative effect. Don't forget to give a pet name to each Item or you might inadvertently sell them. Your worn stuff will be repaired in reverse order - worst first. Go on a long trip or train in the Fighters Guild for a month and your stuff is repaired, back to 'New' status, BUT to do this you need to add the 1.06.200 patch and modify the z.config file as follows - 1. In WIN95 click on the DOS Prompt from the Startup menu 2. Access the Daggerfall directory - "CD c:\Dagger" (excluding the " ") 3. Type "Magrep" 4. Tab to the bottom of the file and type "magicrepair 1" (note space between last r and the 1) 5. Use ALT + F keys and release them 6. Use X key to exit and Y key to save 7. Type "exit" to return to WIN95 Up to three cloaks or similar can be worn in addition to armour so use these as already Enchanted (Magic) Items or create your own. Spell Absorption is a useful cloak to have. QUESTS There are easy quests and there are painful quests. The former are stuff like Deliver this item, or Collect that item. Guard that mage (don't do two of these back to back - a bug still exists when you do). I guess in a nutshell - EASY QUESTS HARDER QUESTS = DUNGEON CRAWLS Mage Guild guard duty Find Ingredient Collect research Kill rogue Mage / Thief / Traitor / Giants Take/Collect an Item to a Find lost person town (not a Dungeon) Exorcism (at later levels - Banish Daedra (look for a some are false but others Frost (blue) Daedra involve killing a Daedra) Investigation of miracles etc Trace thief - not a DC but need to ask citizens questions until you get a lead Kill animal/ ghost etc in a Artifact quests house/shop Collect 'The Oracle' (a person) The USA version of Daggerfall has more interesting quests than the UK. A patch called COMPUSA.Zip exists for this which I'm sending to Sue, or it can be downloaded from the Daggerweb site. It potentially gives you longer, more intricate quests with interesting story lines. ARTIFACT QUESTS Once you are able to use the Daedra Summing facility you can go get some interesting kit. Some are more useful than others. Herewith a table of just when you can summon each Daedra. In addition to these the Fighters Guild can give up to a further 7 Artifact Quests which are not date related. One of these may be used to obtain Hircines' Ring which is included in the list below DATE DAEDRA ARTIFACT Comments 1st Morning Clavicus Vile Masque of Star Clavicus 13th Morning Meridia Ring of Khajiiti Star 2nd Sun's Beothiah Ebony Mail must be raining Dusk 20th Sun's Mehrunes Dagon Mehrunes' Razor Dusk 20th Evening Molag Bal Mace of Molag Bal Star 5th Mid Hircine Hircine Shield Summon via Year Witches of Glenmoril Wyrd 2nd Sun's Sheogorath Wabbajack must be Dawn Thunderstorm 16th Sun's Sanguine Sanguine Rose must be raining Dawn 9th Rain's Peryite Spellbreaker must be raining Hand Shield 8th Frost Malacath Volendrung bugged in my Fall game! 13th Frost Mephala Ebony Blade Fall 5th First Hermaeus Mora Oghma Infinium * very, very Seed useful 21st First Azura Azura's Star Seed 9th Second Namira Ring of Namira Seed 10th Sun's Vaernima Skull of Height Corruption 8th Hearth's Nocturnal Skeleton Key must be raining Fire * This enables you to allocate 30, not 50, points to your character stats.
