Letters @~Any letters or emails received on an adventuring-related topic @~may be reprinted in here unless marked 'not for publication'. ------------------------------------------------------------------ @~First, part of an email from Kjell Robertsen, Norway Hi! I just read the letter about Cyrix cpu's (Carolyn Brown's I think it was). Anyway, the problem has nothing to do with Cyrix nor does it have anything to do with games, it has to do with Microsoft's lousy programming and that laughable excuse for an operating system called Windows 95. It should be renamed to Bugdos 95. The problem is that some Windows 95 versions does not recognise the Cyrix CPU as a Pentium CPU, to correct this you need a little program called "CPUiden" which you can find on the Internet, or you can find it attached to this message if your E-Mail client can handle attachments as separate files. The program only cures some versions of Windows, it cured my problem and I have a UK version of Windows '95 which I use for testing. The problem does not exist in OS/2 of course which is one reason why I prefer it to Windows. My computers use the Cyrix 166+ CPU, but the program should also cure the 150+. Some older versions of Windows '95 may also need the newest fixpac which can be found at Microsoft's FTP site. @~The program same through safe and sound and has been added to @~the library. I sent a copy to Carolyn and she said it seems to @~be doing the trick. I'll let her tell you: ------------------------------------------------------------------ From Carolyn Brown, Cumbria (extract) ... Thank you too, for including the CPUiden program. I am most grateful to Kjell for providing it. At first, I wasn't quite sure what I was supposed to do, so I simply double-clicked on the file with the floppy in drive A. Something seemed to happen very quickly, and it was done. Not knowing what to expect, I then rebooted and hopefully went into 'My Computer', Properties, to see if Windows now recognised my CPU instead of calling it a 486. No luck as far as that went. A bit disappointed but undeterred I then stuck the CD containing the demo of 'Diablo' (which had first alerted me to my problem) into the drive, and tried to run it. Sadly I still got the message 'This game requires at least a Pentium to run'. However, one second later the demo suddenly kicked into life and ran perfectly whereas before it was sticking at the message. I don't know how this little program works, but it certainly did its stuff on this occasion and so I am very hopeful that any future 'Pentium only' software I may buy will be OK. Thank you again to you and to Kjell. @~Glad we could help! ------------------------------------------------------------------ @~Next part of an email from: Andrew Wielochowski, Llandovery Humbug and Jacaranda Jim are now both PUBLIC DOMAIN as Graham is too busy with "real work" to have time to support his games and hence wants no more registrations. Did you know that? @~Nope ... Humbug is now V5.0 and comes with the online hints and without the need to register. @~Andrew sent me a copy which has been added to Disk 157. Within @~days, another email came from the man himself ... ------------------------------------------------------------------ Graham Cluley, Herts (extract) I decided earlier this year to "officially" put my adventure games in the public domain - so I'm no longer selling or supporting them. However, users are free to visit my website at: http://members.aol.com/gcluley where they can download full, "registered" versions of the games complete with online hints etc. In fact one person has even donated a step-by-step full solution to Humbug which is pretty impressive (or pretty sad - depending on your opinion :) ) Anyway, if it's okay with you I won't pay in your cheque and I'll feed it to Hammy the Hamster. But feel free to download the registered version from the website and play to your heart's content. Feel free to tell readers of SynTax too. Glad to see you're on the net at last! If you haven't found them already you'll find links to some adventure-related newsgroups on my website. @~Somewhere else for you to check out. - o -
