WING COMMANDER - ACADEMY Reviewed by Andrew J Wielochowski ************************************************************ Wing Commander is a series of seven for those who are wondering:- Wing Commander Wing Commander II Wing Commander III Wing Commander IV Wing Commander - Academy Wing Commander - Privateer Privateer 2 - The Darkening Wing Commander - Academy is a game like Frontier Elite, but without all the different Galaxies. It has only one set mission and the rest you make yourself. You have the choice of which craft to fly and you can select a wingman. Once you have clicked on Create Mission you are given a little radar map. You can then place the hazards or enemies wanted within the little map. Among the many Fighters there are also Space stations, Mines, Asteroids and objects to collect during the mission. You can save your levels and load them later. The Gauntlet, which is the mission supplied, is tough and once you get used to all the controls and options on your own missions you can then test your skill here. Wing Commander - Academy is the fourth Wing Commander in the series. Frontier Elite 2 may not have as amazing graphics, but I think the choice of landing on planets and going to different star systems is much more interest. Wing Commander is more blow-'em-all-up style whereas Frontier Elite 2 is far more tactical and more interesting. Wing Commander is very fuzzy when it comes to the requirements. On a P100 it still needs EMM386 and not too many TSRs. Judging by the help file supplied you need to finely tune your computer if it doesn't work for a reason other than EMM386. WCA is a very exciting game. The controls and tactics are hard to perfect and as all the enemy craft have their own way of fighting it gives the game a challenging look and atmosphere. This game should have a place reserved in every Space-Shoot-'em-up fanatic's collection. - o -
