STONEVILLE MANOR by Randy Jensen A BASIC text adventure on disk PCPD 283 (Revamped as TOMMY'S MANOR by Tommy's Toys on disk 1167) Solution by Bev Truter Unfortunately the BASIC.COM programme provided on disk 283 didn't seem to work for me, so you'll probably need a more sophisticated version of BASIC (eg, GWBASIC.EXE) to load and run Stoneville. @~Fixed! ... Sue The SAVE function also proved a tad problematic, or more accurately non-existent, so this is definitely not a game for the impatient! Also, when an option for reading instructions appears, type "Y", as this game has some pedantic quirks. Neither the SAVE GAME, END GAME or CLEAR SCREEN commands work, and LOOK is not understood in any shape or form. (Use CTRL/ALT/DELETE keys to quit the game). Tommy's Manor looks the same, but runs from an .EXE file and has a pretty graphic and music at the start of play; and a HELP file accessed by typing HELP during play. You can't SAVE a game either, but QUIT saves your place automatically, and ABORT quits without saving. The EXAMINE command is replaced with LOOK, eg, LOOK TREE, LOOK BOOK. To save time I've indicated direction of movement by N, S, etc., but in both versions of the game you have to enter GO S, GO W, etc. to move to another location. You begin the game in Main Street, and the General Store, State Hospital and Stoneville Manor are the 3 buildings accessible from here. Enter Store, buy shoes, buy axe, go out. S to Wooded area with pine trees, chop trees, you see a pile of rotten slimy logs. Drop axe. E to Courtyard, get stove, S-W to Meadow and get balloon. N-N, drop balloon and stove here. Enter Manor (In the Foyer), get basket, S-S to Atrium, open vent, get twine. E to the Gallery, examine the picture to reveal a safe, which can only be opened when you have the correct 3 numbers for the combination. The door here cannot be opened as it's locked from the other side. Go N to the Study, and open the credenza to reveal a mask and a book. Get mask and book, E to the Oriel, get matches, W. Read the book, and collect the 6 items mentioned in 2 trips as you won't be able to manage the whole lot at once. Open vent, but you won't be able to enter any of the vents yet - you are too fat and need some exercise first! (In Study) W-N, go out, N-E-E to edge of the Gorge. Read the aged sign, which tells you this is an appropriate place to build the Hot Air Balloon (For this you need the weather balloon, stove, basket, twine, matches and logs). Build balloon, enter balloon, fly balloon, go out. On the Top of Plateau you see an abandoned shack, enter shack, examine table to find a note with a number written on it (randomly-generated so it's different in each replay of Stoneville). Go out, enter balloon, fly balloon, go out (Edge of Gorge). W to Rocky Trail and the fish net, get net, W-S to Main Street. "Go jogging" to lose weight, drop shoes. (In Tommy's Manor the return trip in the balloon deposits you at the edge of the lake). S-S-E to Courtyard, get raft, S-E to Bank of Lake. Inflate raft, enter lake, S to Southern Bay, get Trout. N, go out, drop raft and mask. W-N, enter Manor (Atrium). Enter vent (at outlet), D to inlet where you see a closed vent. Open vent, go out to West wing of the Wine Cellar. Examine the burlap bag to find a snorkel, get snorkel. Examine the case of chablis and you find one bottle is missing. The serval prevents you from going E, so feed serval and it disappears. E to East Wing of Cellar where you find a Crystal Goblet. Get Goblet, examine goblet to find a note with the second number on it. U to Top of Stairway, open door, enter door to Gallery. W to Atrium, go out to Courtyard. S-E to Bank of Lake. Get raft and mask, enter lake. DIVE (in Southern Bay) and D to reach an underwater location where you see a tunnel. Enter tunnel, W to a cavern where you find the missing bottle of chablis. Examine it to discover the third number for the safe. E-out-U-N-out to the bank of the lake. W-N-E-E to the Gallery; and total disappointment in both versions. STONEVILLE MANOR: Whatever combination of the 3 numbers I tried, using numerals and letters, nothing happened and the safe obstinately remained locked ... AAARRRGGGHHH!!!! (I've been reliably informed that this is an error in the programming). You *should* be able to open it and find the old miser's will, which leaves the manor and the contents of the safe to whoever can open it. TOMMY'S MANOR: Well, at least you can open the safe in this version - "CLICK!......You see a will!" But that's as far as it goes. You can't get, take, read, or otherwise acquire the will, so you never find out what's written in it .... AAAAARRRRGGGHHHH ! (According to the HELP screens you can READ WILL, but in reality you can't). - o -
