Are they friend or foe? Meanwhile, you live a comfortable life in San Francisco following your exploits in the first of these space adventures from Legend. START: In your living room. Wait (until you get a message on the PV. You learn that you have to brief the ambassador for his trip to the Artifact. Go to the roof and wait for an aircar), wait (another message comes through, a Sect hit squad are on their way! Keep the elevators out of action and make your way to the roof using the stairs) Part One - Escape SW, get matchbook and fax, NE, light match, put it in trash, again (the fire alarm goes off and a computerized voice says to evacuate the building), SE, push button (by lift, it won't work because of the 'fire'), S (stairwell), open door, E (to the roof and safety. You are taken by aircar to the Romeo Delta Two base in San Francisco. In a conference room you learn about the ship, the Aquila, which is going to the Artifact. But in mid-briefing, terrorists launch a gas attack. The scientist is about to tell you the auto-launch code when a terrorist bursts in but you are suddenly saved by a soldier who tells you to sit tight ... no chance! You're off on another adventure!) Get all (radio, gas mask, hand grenade, slip of paper), wear mask, x slip (the code is AERIE. Suddenly gas enters the room. Luckily the mask saves you), E (Engineering Lab), x robot arm (stops you going north. It has a cable attached to it), x cable, unplug it (the robot arm shuts down), get tuning fork, N (Tram Station), wait (until the tram comes), enter tram, wait (until the tram stops at the next station), out, S (Mission Control), x specialist, get badge, x it (clearance Alpha One, Spec Code A552), x console (you are asked to enter your spec code), A552. You enter a menu system. Select Mission X/Aquila and read the sections if you like. Then select Execute Systems Check (everything is ok) and Initiate Auto Launch Sequence. Enter the code AERIE and a 30 minute countdown starts. N, wait (for tram), enter tram, wait (until tram decelerates), pull pin (on grenade), drop grenade (tram is now at station), out, S (Mechanical Room where you see a console, 3 coloured pipes. A voice says the oxygen levels in booster two are below operational level), x console, read screen. Another menu system. Select Fuelling Status, then Diagnostic, then Recommended Action (replace the sensor after releasing the lock, the LOX transfer subsystem has a blue stripe and the locks have already been released). X blue pipe (has a sensor unit attached), get blue unit, x red pipe, get red unit, attach red unit to blue pipe, x lever (set to off-line), pull it (fuelling is completed), W (Gantry Platform where an elevator takes you to the top of the tower), S (into Ship). Read sign (door mechanism), x button (for the door activation), push it (door closed and air is recycled), U (Flight Deck), x seats (left for Captain), sit in left seat, wait (until you take off. Once it is safe, you enter cryosleep for the trip to the Artifact. When you arrive you are awakened and watch, horrified, as a tractor beam drags the Aquila into the Artifact!). Part Two - The Artifact E, open cabinet, get all (vial, autodoc, hypo unit, bandage; you don't get the radio as you see no need for it), push button, north (Corridor). Open door, N, N (Cargo Bay), U (Storage Room, you see a young woman here, a blue metal box and a bowl), x woman (injured), x autodoc, put cuff on woman, x readout (venom toxin?), x hypo, x green dial (dosage), x blue dial (different medications), turn blue dial to 4 (antitoxin), turn green dial to 5 (maximum), flip switch, inject woman, wait until toxin level drops and she speaks, warning about giant spiders and scorpions, x readout (infection), turn blue dial to 3 (antibiotic), inject woman, wait (she recovers and talks, and you notice a green cube which she had been lying on. Her name is Diana and she tells you about Jack, her partner who is now dead, and about the dangerous robot spider), get cube, get autodoc, get bowl, open box (see crystal rod), get rod. Talk to Diana and she will tell you lots of things about the ship, from a menu system. D, E, E (Terminal Room), x console, open panel, put cube into jack (the cube shimmers and the screens and computer come to life), x screen (you press the first button and see the image of a woman who you converse with. She explains she is only alive as the memories of the original woman, she exists in the computer matrix) You enter another menu system. You can converse with Miki and other characters. Mike tells you a lot about the Oldest One, the intelligence that runs the ship from the central computer. You must gain control and fly the ship to Earth. Do this by shutting down the elements of the computer system, reaching there by going through the zoo sections rather than trying to pass the spider. Remove the green cores from the computer. The code to the bulkhead door is 13555 (this is random). Use a red cylindrical device to traverse the force fields to the zoos. The Arab, Anwar, tells you the robot spider uses sensors to 'see'. Exit when you've had enough. W, W, NE, NE (Door by keypad), x keypad, type the characters for 13555 (in this case) and the door opens, NE, NE (Obelisk Room with a red force field and red sphere), x obelisk (you note the pattern), touch sphere with rod (both go blue, as does the field). N (into an alien ecosystem. The portal and sphere go red again. A green blob stretches a pseudopod towards you), N (by a spiny thicket), wait (a creature emerges, touches the ooze by you and gets gummed up), get spine, S (the blob eats the spine you are carrying and stays stuck to you), N (the blob flows into the thicket and starts to eat the spiny stalks), wait (it makes a gap), NE (Clearing by a tree, three lizard creatures arrive), climb tree, get fruit, throw it at lizard (bulls eye!), get fruit, throw it at lizard (bang!), get fruit, throw it at lizard (getting rid of the last one, but you fall out of the tree), wait (until a different lizard arrives and steals your rod). NW (by a tentacle bush with stalks holding crystal eggs), x eggs (red, crystalline), get egg (the tentacles form a barrier), SE, SW, S, fill bowl with ooze, N, NE, NW, throw ooze at tentacles (sticking them together), get egg, W (Gully. You see the lizard holding the rod and its nest), put egg in nest (the lizard drops the rod, gets the egg, nibbles it and runs off), get rod, E, touch sphere with rod (they go blue as before), N (Obelisk Room). X obelisk (more signs), touch sphere with rod, N (Corridor), N (Obelisk Room), x obelisk(signs), touch sphere with rod. N (An underground chamber with roots above your head), x roots, U (Meadow), x carcass, get skin, NW (Forest), get branch, SE, NE (you encounter protohumans!), wear skin (not enough to fool them), SW, get mud (you smear yourself), NE, N (you can now pass; you're by a Cave Entrance), NE (Cavern), get thong, N (you meet the chief, he sniffs you disgustedly), N (he won't let you pass, but shows you a red crystal sphere), show rod to chief (he throws powder on the fire and points to it), x vial (alcohol), throw vial on fire (boom! The chief is impressed. He and his men lead you out of the cave to some sabretooth tigers. He gets a spear and throws it at a tiger, killing one on the third try, now it is your turn and they give you a spear). Turn blue dial to 6 (sedative), tie hypo to spear (with the thong), throw spear at tiger (impressing the chief even more. He makes a speech and gives you his bone necklace. You appear to be the new leader! But you give it back and, as they leave, collect the hypo unit), SE, NE (back to the cavern), light branch (at the fire), N (now you can see), NW, NW (Forcefield), touch rod to forcefield (goes blue), N (Obelisk Room), x obelisk (noting symbols), touch rod to sphere, N, N (Lab, you see a container and a control unit. x container (has openings covered with flaps), get it, N, N, x obelisk (yet more symbols), touch rod to sphere. N (Rocky Area), open container, NW (creatures are here; they bite you and sting you with their tails. You also see green goo in a trough), get goo, (some creatures crawl in), close cage, turn blue dial to 4 (antitoxin), inject me, S, touch rod to forcefield, S, S, S, put cage on platform, x unit. You enter a graphical display. Press the top button to see a picture of the creature. Change the creature, using the buttons, to suckers and no tail. Press the bottom button when you've finished. The machine injects one creature and it looks sick. The others also change until they resemble the picture you picked. Get cage, N, N, touch rod to sphere, N, NW (stung and bitten again), open cage (the creatures in the cage mix with the others and the mutation spreads), inject me, wait (until the creatures are harmless), N, NW, touch rod to portal, N Obelisk Room), x obelisk (and more symbols). NW, open door (the spider appears!), W (Equipment Bay where you see a particle beam gun), get gun (you can't; the robot spider turns up), x field (see rectangular metal key), turn key (field vanishes), get gun, shoot sensor (robot is now blind), shoot robot (it can't get away. You can now safely use the central corridor). N (Computer Room), wait (computer speaks and tells you it is going to destroy Gateway; it starts to pump out the air), open panel (see 6 coloured cores), get green core, (do this in each panel), NW, open panel, get green core, NE, open panel, get green core, SE, open panel, get green core, (the pumps stop removing the air and Miki is now in charge. The Oldest One has moved to the Engineering data cores and is trying to overload the engines. You have 15 minutes and must find the cores for engineering and take them off-line. Mike will help; you must keep just one on-line. You must pull the cores and she will tell you which does what), get blue core (yes, that is for engineering), SW, get blue core, NW, get blue core (you hear two doors open. Now you must program each orbit course into the navigation console on the bridge. But, wait ... something moves along the data lines ... it's the Oldest One and it destroys Miki. The ship will explode in 30 minutes) SE, S, S, S, S, S, S (Cargo Bay), E, E (Terminal Room), get cube (eliminating the Oldest One. You must go to the forward part of the ship, find the bridge and figure out how to get the ship home), W, W, N, N, N, N, N, N, NE, NEW (a doorway has opened in the north wall), N (Bridge), x paper (to see codes from obelisks) x console, set it for the apemen's code (as that is Earth) then press the big button. Heading for Earth, you and Diana collect the artifacts on the floor of the bridge and keep the fork and rod. You return to Earth and make a report. But then your transmissions seem to be jammed. Finally a message gets through to you. It was the Phoenix Sect jamming them, but now they have launched ships crewed by commandos, aiming to take over the Artifact. They know where the Assassins live, a black hole called the Kugelblitz, and want to find them and bring them back to cleanse the Earth of humanity. Suddenly the Sect arrive and you and Diana split up and hide. You hide in a pod - an escape pod. You quickly key in symbols engraved on one and it launches! You travel for several hours and land. Part Three - Rescue You land on a frozen planet. Get clamp, x it (see button), x compass (points north), get it, x panel, x mechanism (suddenly you see a crystalline creature coming towards you. It displays a scene of you landing and you see yourself following it. When it leaves) follow alien, E, E.(you arrive at a village), S ( a Large Dwelling where you meet an old Kord. It shows you a scene of a Heechee ship blasting a crater and a glacier growing over the area and, later, through tremors, passages forming inside. The Kords roll a ball in the maze and follow it, finding the ship but unable to open it. They carve a likeness of it, and leave) N, x child (it is rubbing a stick against its head which makes a high pitched whine), SE (Ice Garden of ice sculptures), x sculptures (a cutter, basket, gem, Heechee ship, worm and flying lamprey), x ship (number 51221 on it in Heechee symbols; this random), get all (6 carvings). NW, E (Fissure with Kords around a dust-filled pit), x pit, x dust (Kords tells a story of four Kords round a pit, 3 absorbing dust, then going along a rock bridge. One Kord, the one that didn't have the dust, is pulled off the bridge by a tentacle, so the rest can pass safely. Later they scrape a rocky area clear so a worm can eat it to give dust. One Kord bangs a stick appendage on its head to scare off a flying creature and a third gets the dust in a bowl). W, SE, S (kord sees gem carving and draws back), show gem to kord (it shows a scene where two kords enter a cave half-hidden by spikes of ice, ending in a cavern with red glowing crystals, and a kord stuck to a crystal), show bowl to kord (it makes one from crystal which you take, dropping the ice bowl), show cutter to kord (again, it makes one from crystal which you take and drop the ice one). N, NW, W, N, N, E, E (Cave Entrance half-hidden by spikes of ice), N, N, N, N, N, N, N, N (Crystal Cave; see kord outcropping hanging from one crystal; luckily the light from the crystal lit your way!), get kord with cutter, get kord, S (you make your way back through the cavern to daylight), W, W, W (Rock Cleft, you see a tentacled crystal creature under a spring below a bridge), throw kord at tentacle, wait (until it eats it and dies; kords appear you, get images of thanks and they go north), N (Stone Forest with "diggles"), N, N (Cliff Face, you see symbols under the ice), scrape symbols with cutter (you scrape the rock bare), wait (until diggle makes hole), N, N (Mountain Hollow with a dome, we can't do anything here for the moment but you realize it is a Heechee Rescue Station), S, S, S, S, S, fill bowl with water, W, W, S, S (Glacier Entrance), W (Glacier Passage). The passages leading to the crater centre are random. You can sense a tilt but not see which way it goes. So in each location 'pour water' and follow the direction in which it flows. In this way make your way to ... (Crater Centre), D (ladder breaks, you fall near the ship), x panel, open it, x mechanism (clamp is corroded), x corroded clamp, push blue button, get corroded clamp, put clean clamp in socket, push red button (fastens to machinery), x ship carving (random numbers, in this case 51221), x keypad, type 51221 (hatch clicks), open hatch (see corpse and glowing pod), x pod (pyramidal) get it, drop corroded clamp, push red button, get clean clamp, put clean clamp on corroded clamp, stand on it, press red button (you're catapulted out of the pit). NW, E, NE, N, N, N, N, N, N (back to dome), x dome, put pod in depression (dome opens, you grab the pod and dive in). E (Machine Room), get control, x control ... You are now going to control a robot. The control shows you what he can see. Pushing buttons moves him, opens doors and uses his clamp. Push the button to open the room where he is. Then press ESC. W, W (a new exit has opened west), W (Supply Room, here is the robot). X remote and move the robot E, E, E to the Machine room. ESC. A simple symbol is on the control panel, it looks like one you saw in the machine room), D, S, E (back to machine room). Wait here and watch the screen, note the patterns on the screen for each colour. When you've seen all six ... W, N, U, X remote (note screen seen through robot's eyes), ESC, press appropriate colour button (the ship takes off). Your ship flies into a black hole and emerges at a Heechee city in the centre. A Heechee enters the ship when you land. You are taken to a couch and "educated" and then taken to a Heechee Council. They agree they can't let you leave so your ship is adapted so it can only fly between the planets of the core. You're taken to the main Heechee city. @~To be concluded next issue - o -
