Use the trams west of quarters), open cabinet, get pouch, x it (sleeping powder which must be dissolved), S, W (into Tram. You arrive at the Quad of a campus and a Heechee tells you to go through the door south), S (Lounge, a Heechee guard is here), wait (until the Heechee drinks from container), wait (he puts it on the table), wait (until you're told you can go in. You enter and give your talk at the appropriate time. Then return to the lounge. The guard tells you to go home and rest), N, E (Tram to return to the City Streets). W (onto the tram again), S, open pouch (yellow powder), wait (until Heechee puts thermos on table), put powder in thermos (when on table), wait (until Heechee drinks and falls asleep. You can now explore the campus), get thermos. N, E (City Streets), N (your Apartment), x device (Raphide leaves you a message but so does an unknown person who wants you to meet him at the Campus Theatre at 3pm), S, W, N, wait until 2:50, NE (Theatre), wait (for the lecture; a figure slips into the seat next to you. He is Macropterous, a member of the White Hand, and gives you a card to use in the ship's computer which will take you to their location. You need Sterigma's second verse to enter, but then the lights come up and he leaves without saying what it is). SW, E, SE (A speaker is talking of Sterigma), wait (until he recites the second verse which mentions wings will ride the sky, knives of fire will fall, boiling seas flood the farmlands, stone will crack from hammer blows), E, S, (Gardens; see mound of dirt and plaque), read plaque (ironweed grows very vigorously on the ancestral Homeworld), dig earth (find seeds), get seeds. N, N, N (City Hangar), U (Ship, you slide in the new card), x controls (codes for Admin Planet and City Hangar and a new unknown one). Set the ship to the unknown course and press button. You land on a barren world. D, N (Temple), x plaza, x disks (four of them, each with a symbol - plant, dagger, hammer, pair of wings - which can be turned to point the icons at the different altars, one on each wall), x walls (north shows wind, flames east, waves south and rock west), turn disk ... You see a graphic representation of the disks. It isn't easy to identify what they are! Turn the top left one (plant) south, top right (hammer) west, bottom right (wings) north, bottom left (dagger) east. Stairs open up in the centre. You descend and meet a Heechee. He is Exegisis, leader of the White Hand. He tells you about the Ancient Ancestors. Talk to him and you find you need 3 components to make your ship able to leave the Core. You need a Gravity Field Generator, Gravity Lens and Nav Data Chip. You will find the first where underground excavations are being carried out, the second he doesn't know, the third maybe in another ship. Bring them back when you have them. He also gives you a course code card for a place where they are carrying out excavations. U, S, U (Ship; you slide in the new course code card), x controls, select the new one and travel there (you land somewhere else on the same planet). D, N (Dig Site), x column, x box, plant seeds (they grow over the column and support it), push button (to release the box. It falls to the ground and so does a shiny object), get generator, get object (it looks like a badge of some sort), x badge (The words Field Science are engraved on it), S, U (Ship), x controls, fly to Administration Planet. D (Docking Area, a technician approaches you. He tells you about the probes they send out and that only science personnel are allowed in the command centre. He also tells you how to program the probes), N (a sensor sniffs your badge and lets you through. You're in the Command Centre), x console, set the co-ordinates to those of the Temple Site, push button (a probe takes off). S, U, x controls, set it to Temple Site, push button, D, wait (until probe crashes), wait (Heechee come out and dismantle it, taking the pieces into the temple), U, x controls, set them to City Hangar, D. S, E, wait (until the doors to the Place of Seeing open), E, wait (while you're told that the lift being used is protected by sensors and a lens at the bottom of the shaft, for safety), wait (until you can leave), W, S, E, D (Sewer; you see a shaft the other side of the gunk), put box in sludge, push button (sewage congeals), N, N (Tube Junction), drop all except pod, open pod, wear pod, U, U, U, jump (the sensors catch you; you land at the bottom by a lens), get lens, get lens, put it in pod, U, U, U, U (to the Junction), S, S, get all, push button, get box, S, W, N, N, U, x controls, fly to Temple Site, D, N, D (you talk to the Heechee again. He says the ship will be ready soon but you could only overtake your enemies if they had the TransWarp Drive theories developed by Solifluction. His father, Astatine, whose pod was supposedly destroyed when Solifluction died, and Raphide, might know. Raphide doesn't answer messages. However, you have had a message from him. Also Exegisis knows that Fogram has Astatine's pod, even though he is crazy. He is currently using him on a top secret project in the Place of Learning. Raphide will be drawn out if he knows Astatine is still alive. You must direct a message to Raphide in your next speech. Exegisis reveals himself as Convergence to add weight to your story. Come back once you have contacted Raphide) U, S, U, set controls for City Hangar, D, S, W, W, W (Tram), S, wait (until the light goes green), W (you give your talk, including the message for Raphide. Then you leave), N, E (Tram), N, x device (Raphide contacts you. Tell him Astatine was saved by Fogram and that Convergence told you. He says you must kill Astatine. Tell him you want the TransWarp Drive theories. You make a deal. He says Astatine will be in a silver box. Bring it here and attach the port to the communicator's transfer jack). S, E, E, wait (until Place of Seeing opens again. When the roof opens...) look through telescope and identify Aesthemis, wait (until you can leave), W, W, W, W (to a door with buttons on it. Depress them to take the shape of Aesthemis. Light goes green and door opens. You enter a Laboratory). X device, get it (before you can, an image of an Ancient Ancestor appears. It's Astatine and he talk to you. Tell him you can take him out of his pain and that Raphide sent you. Tell him to disengage his datastore but ask him about the project too. It bends light and aims to make things, or people, invisible. It is powered by a stud but only works on light in the invisible spectrum so far. He says he'll give you a demo and gives the code for the lamp - random, in this case 13544), get visor, wear it, get datastore, x keypad, 13544, wait (the light beams don't bend so far now), wait (until they hit the device head on), get device, remove visor, E. E, N, x communicator (it's Raphide. You follow his instructions and Astatine is erased. Raphide then tells you the truth about Fogram and Solifluction but says he knows nothing about the drive. But you forgive him). S, E, E, N, U, x controls, fly to Temple Site, D, N, D (talk to Convergence. Tell him Solifluction was "stilled" and he tells you about Datavaults. You must recover Solifluction), U, S, U, x controls, fly to Administration Planet, D, E, SE (Hallway with lenses on the walls), E (you get injured by something from the first lens and retreat), wear visor (you see beams of light crossing the corridor), wear belt, push stud, E (the beams bend round you. Now in Vault Entrance), remove visor. Wait (until sparks from the cable behind the shield damage it so much that a robot workthing removes it), get cable, touch cable to case (scorching the case), wait (until the workthing removes the case), x console (type the name of the stored personality you wish to locate), traitor (as that was the name Fogram always used to refer to Solifluction, you're given a random number, in this case 53223). E (DataVault with keypad and chute by the door), x keypad, 53223, wait (a workthing brings a datafan and gives it to you), plug fan into datastore, press download, get datafan (from port), put it in chute, W, wait (until belt is recharged), push stud, W, NW, W, U, x controls, go to Temple Site, D, N, D (you talk to Convergence, say you have recovered Solifluction. He takes the datastore and Solifluction appears to give help. The drive is adapted and so is the belt, to render the wearer virtually invisible. You enter your ship and it blasts off to intercept the Artifact. Arriving there...) NE, open door, NE, NE (Cargo Bay. Diana calls you up. The terrorist leader has all your stuff in a security case and is in the aft section. There are guards too. Diana says the couch is a telepathic device. She feels you could probably make contact with it too, as well as listen. She heads off for the Zoos. You go back down to the cargo bay.) S, S, S (your old probe ship), get radio (you turn it to frequency 1), wear belt, press stud (you're invisible), N, N, N, W, W (past the guard to the Dream Room), lie on couch (you tune into the terrorist leader. Pretend to be an Assassin! Tell him to go to the bridge. You see him put everything in the safe and say "safe: close". You get up from the couch.) E, E, E, E (Terminal Room, the safe is here), drop radio (you put it by the safe), W, W, W, W, lie on couch (in contact with the terrorist leader, tell him to instruct his men, use the expression with the words safe and open in it), E, E, E, E (the safe is open), get all, put cube in matrix (the Old One is back on-line, the ship will explode in 20 minutes ...) You and Diana dash to the Heechee transport and take off. You watch as the Artifact explodes and then you head back to Earth. Your fame spreads again but one day you get a call to attend an important meeting. Officials of the UN flank a Heechee who says "I told you we would meet again, my human friend." Fogram is defeated and, together, humans and Heechee will fight the Assassins. Score 1600/1600 - o -
