DOOM/DOOM 2 (Req. 386 DX, 4mb Ram, VGA. Sound card recommended.) Reviewed by Michael Raven. Doom, although rather outdated now, is still one of the best games available for the PC. For anyone not aware of Doom, (ha!) it is a first-person perspective shoot-em-up. Or, you see what your person sees. You go around a number of levels, blasting apart enemies from your own buddies, now on the enemy side, to huge spider demons, firing chainguns at you. From 7 weapons, from a punch to a 'BFG 9000', a slow-firing gun that can kill almost anything with one shot, you have a large selection of weaponry to kill with! Huge amounts of player-created levels, sounds, graphics, patches for new weapons & monsters, anything thought of for Doom, is around somewhere. With cheat modes allowing you to learn the basics, you can sidestep, run, walk, and blast the enemy into nothing. And if that gets boring, a quick link-up to a network, or even to just one other computer will get you into a cooperative game, or a deathmatch, where you fight to the death, only to be reincarnated to fight again. With excellent playability, (if you die, it's your mistake - not the game's!) marvellous graphics and sound, plus a moodiness to scare you out of your wits when a cacodemon blasts you apart from behind, it's an excellent game, with very little in my estimation to recommend Quake over it. Of course, we can't run Quake, but Doom will do until we can. PLAYABILITY 95% Perfect! LASTABILITY 87% Levels do get boring once played several times, but there are several thousand unofficial ones in existence! GRAPHICS 90% Great, particularly from a distance. SOUND 94% Essential - without decent sound, you can be sneaked up on! OVERALL SCORE 91% With extra points on for it's inexpensiveness, (Doom 2 can be purchased for around œ10-œ12 nowadays) I can't recommend Doom enough. Get it! - o -
