Myth (Part of SynTax Disk 1175) Reviewed by Graham Raven My initial impression is "Oh no, it's a text game, and it's all Greek to me .... okay and a bit Roman too!" (ie classical mythology). The Goddess Venus appears in the game. Hmm, I seem to remember that she was the Goddess of love?, but Saturn, erm was he a titan/giant? Now where did I keep that copy of Bullfinch's Mythology? (as is recommended in the text file!) I'm sure every home has one somewhere?! Hmm, methinks masked bandits must have broken in at the dead of night and nicked our copy - bother! As you may know already if you've read any of my previous reviews, I'm not the world's number one text adventure game player. I didn't realise initially that I had to make a map of where I'd been or where I was going to! If you're one of those oddities like me who very rarely play text based games, you really must make a map, otherwise you've not the slightest idea where you are. My wife is always telling me off when playing Doom, for not stopping and looking at the map. I usually just move around more or less at random killing anything which moves, and eventually I find somewhere new to explore ... or I don't! With tendencies like these, text adventure games can be pretty difficult I can tell you and my first score total when I gave up completely was a heady nil points! Not content with this I returned the next evening to try my hand once more in the realm of Myth. Look, I'm not a text adventure game type person okay?! And I did manage to score ten points out of three hundred tonight! I know it's something lacking in me, but, I can't get my head around the fact that the opening screen is described as being "of incredible beauty, birds singing, insects hum as they flit from flower to flower which bloom all around". So I say "Get the flowers" and the program says "I see no flowers!" Nor apparently does it see any birds, which it's just told me are singing their heads off and neither does it know what insects are either! Now okay, the birds could just happen to be invisible, so the game can't 'see them', but to my twisted reckoning it's just got to know what insects are because it's just told me they're buzzing all over the place! It's at this point that I start seriously thinking in terms of saying "Give Saturn the fish!" I am perfectly aware that there are no fish in this game, but does that make any less sense than what I'm already encountering? I've amassed a total of ten points by virtue of picking up a ladder. That's good enough for me, another attempt might result in a negative score. Rating: Flatulent (and that's only because I'm in a good mood!) - o -
