The Sea Phantom - part of SynTax disk PD 706 Author: John Olsen Solution by Bev Truter on PC The adventure begins with you standing on the front porch of Windward House - the spooky old mansion once owned by Captain Thorne. S-W to the Parlour, get newspaper and read it - there's a story about a ghost ship that appears in Smugglers' Cove - legends say that Captain Thorne's ghost will pilot the ship until his soul is finally put to rest. Drop newspaper, E-E to the Study. X desk, get Bible, read Bible - you find there's a missing page, which contains Psalm 116. Drop Bible, W-U-W to the Linen Closet. X shelves, get diary, read diary - it reads "put my body to rest in my cabin aboard ship, only the Sea Phantom can put my spirit at ease." Hmmmm - easier said than done - where is his body?? Drop diary, E-D-S-E to the Patio. X vase - you find an iron key, get key. W-S to the Kitchen, X cupboard - you find a box - get box, open box - two matches fall to the floor, get matches, drop box. N-N-N-N-W-W-W to the end of the dirt road, outside the locked door of Spivey Point Lighthouse. Unlock door, drop key, open door, W to the Lighthouse base. X cabinet, get wick. Get oars, Up, X lamp - it's empty and has no wick. Put wick in lamp, get rope. D-E-E, drop rope, N-N (in the dinghy). Drop oars, N to the Sea Phantom where a rope ladder dangles conveniently over the side. U-U to the top of the mast, get spyglass, X spyglass - the ghostly image of Capt. Thorne says that to lift the curse he must feel the damp ocean fog. Down, drop spyglass, West to the Captain's cabin. Get lantern and light it - you now have one match remaining. E-E to the Forecastle, Down, get dagger, E to the Ship's Galley. Open case, get biscuits, W-W to the Hold, where you find a jug and plenty of rats' eyes peering hungrily at you from the darkness. Drop biscuits - the rats devour the biscuits instead of you, get jug, X jug. It's closed with a cork, and appears to be full of kerosene - Aha! Just what you need for that Lighthouse lamp. E-U-W to the Main Deck, get the belaying pin, D-S-S-S-W-W-U. Open jug - the cork pops out and rolls to the floor. Get cork, fill lamp with kerosene, light lamp - a strong beam of light pierces the dark night, to guide the Sea Phantom. D-E-E to the fork in the road. X jug - it's filled with a dense fog. Put cork in jug, drop jug, get rope. E-E-S-S to the Entry Hall. Drop everything except the rope and lantern. S-E-S-E to the old well. Tie rope to well, climb down rope. Ooo-e-e-r-r-r, the rope is old and rotten - it breaks and you fall down to a ledge at the bottom of the well. Go North to a large underground cavern where you see a heavy sledgehammer. Ignore the sledgehammer, and continue North to a sea cave with an exit to the West. Here you find the bleached skeleton of Capt. Thorne. Drop lantern, get skeleton, W-W-N-N-U-W to the Captain's cabin. Drop skeleton, E-D-S-S-S-E-E-S-S to the Entry Hall. Get pin, U-E-N to the Master Bedroom, where a picture of Capt. Thorne hangs on the wall. If you try to get the picture, a strong wind gust pushes you away and prevents you from taking it. E to the Bathroom. X mirror, and you are told that to lift the curse Capt. Thorne must hear the words spoken from Psalm 116. Break mirror with pin, and a page torn from the Bible falls to the floor. Get page and read it - it's the missing Psalm 116. W-S-E to the Sewing Room. X mirror - you discover that Capt. Thorne needs his comfortable old sea boots and a compass at his side. Break mirror with pin and you find a brass key. Drop pin, get key, X table, get magnet. W-U-E to a Musty Attic. Unlock trunk with key, drop key, open trunk, and you find a pair of heavy sea boots. Get boots. W-D-W-D-N-N-W-W to the fork in the road. Get jug, N-E to the East end of the beach. You can't go East through the dark entrance in the cliff, as a strong wind blows you back. By now a corpse should have washed up on the beach - X body - you find a compass, get compass. W-N-N-U-W to the Cabin. Drop boots, drop compass, open jug - a dense sea fog swirls about the cabin - read page. The shimmering figure of Capt. Thorne rises from the skeleton, and hands you an old bottle of wine, which he used to drink to control the winds. He tells you this will help in finding his lost treasure, which you may keep as a reward for freeing his spirit. E-D-S-S to the Rocky Beach. As you step ashore the Sea Phantom slowly sails out of Smugglers' Cove and gradually fades away. Drink wine - you feel a bit strange....E-E, get lantern, South, get sledgehammer. N-W-W-S-E-E-S-S-U-E-N to the Bedroom. Drink wine, get picture - you find a safe in the wall which was behind the picture. Break safe with sledgehammer. The safe breaks and the door swings open, revealing a pile of gold doubloons inside. Get doubloons. Congratulations, you've set free the soul of Capt. Thorne and found his hidden treasure! - o -
