ZassBall By L. Ross Raszewski (Part of Disk 1306) Reviewed by John Ferris on PC ZassBall continues the tradition of writing conversions of arcade games using Inform. ZassBall is a version of the "painter" type game, which has been around since the days of the Atari VCS (early 80's or before). The idea is that the pl ayer has to fill in space using a paintbrush (or a wallbuilder in ZassBall). If the line of paint is completed, the space enclosed by that line is coloured in. The aim of the game is to fill 75% of the space in each level. The catch is that there is a ball thing bouncing about and if it touches an incomplete line, the player loses a life. Each level increases the number of ball things. After looking at several of this type of program (SpaceInvaderz, SameGame and others), I have arrived at the conclusion that Inform isn't that good at games where quick movement is required. ZassBall is a nice demonstration of programming ability, but that is as far as it goes. I still like SameGame the best. ZassBall is available on the IF-Archive as "zball.z5" for anyone who wishes to bother. - o -
