Change of Address Provided on this issue's disk Recently I had to buy a new hard drive, which meant clearing some programs off the smaller of my two current drives, which was the one I was going to replace, and reinstalling them on the other one. Ted-i-ous! But then I spotted an article in a supplement with the Daily Mail which mentioned a useful freeware program which could enable you to just copy a program from one drive to another. Normally this isn't possible with Windows because it totally confuses the registry so that Windows can't find the program. Time to investigate! I downloaded the 32-bit version of the program for Windows 95, 98 and NT from the Net and briefly read the docs with it. It certainly sounded just what I was looking for. I decided to test it out with a fairly simple program, Ulead's PhotoExpress, and see what happened before I really put it through its paces with something like PhotoSuite. COA uses a wizard and runs in a small window. It first asks you to identify the start and end folders (eg E:\ULEAD and G:\ULEAD if you want to move the program from E to G as I did). I had already copied the directory over. The following screens ask you to identify which INI files to search, which shortcuts, and what area of the Registry. In all cases there are defaults and a system of green, red and amber lights show if there is likely to be a problem with anything you choose. The final screen lets you check your choices, back-tracking if necessary, then pressing Next starts COA searching your hard drives. After checking the results of the search and making any last minute changes, a final mouse click sets the conversion underway. PhotoExpress transferred without problems, as did all the other programs I tried except for McAfee's Anti-virus ... but one reinstallation rather than half a dozen was a great time saver. Options are given to dump both the search log and file change log to disk, and it may be possible to reverse the process in many cases. All in all a very useful program which is why I've included it on this issue's disk. Sue - o -
