Doctor Who - Phantasmagoria - A 'Big Finish' audio tape Reviewed by Sue This is a brand new audio tape featuring a full cast rather than simply being read. The Doctor in the tale is played by Peter Davison and it was released in 1999. The Doctor and Turlough find themselves in grave peril back in 1702's London. A young man is chased through the streets - but who, or what, is chasing him? Some bystanders think it must be the work of the Devil, as strange noises and gruesome sights fill the air. The man collapses, dead. In his possession is a playing card. The Doctor's investigations show that this is not an isolated incident. A large number of young men have vanished, seemingly at random. Maybe their hearts were stronger than that of the unfortunate Edmund Carteret. Then again, maybe he was the lucky one because his ordeal is over whereas theirs is just beginning. The Doctor and Turlough are aided by Dr Samuel Holywell, in whose house the TARDIS has appeared. Luckily he is an open minded man, interested in antiquities and the occult. His library proves invaluable to the time travellers as they try to solve the mysterious disappearances. A further complication arises in the form of a highwayman, Major Billy Lovemore, the most wanted man in the area. Is he more than he seems? And then there's Sir Nikolas Valentine, a well known gambler at a local club, the Diabola Club. What part does he play in these events? And why doesn't he ever remove his gloves? This is an excellent drama, only 90 minutes long as are many of these audio tapes, and very well performed. The sound effects are excellent and the whole production enthralling. As usual I listened to it while walking the dog and at one stage, where someone was being chased by forces unknown, I was heading through a rather spooky bit of woodland. I don't mind admitting that bit in particular gave me goosebumps! Now that really is a sign of a good story! - o -
