Get Defensive: the Basics
There are dozens of options for defence. Depending on how many
opponents you're facing, you can either build a tight, densely
walled settlement or a sprawling base where your villagers and
defensive units are hard to find, much less run down and kill.

Beginners tend to underestimate the value of natural tree walls,
which are the perfect defence for your settlement--don't forget, a
forest is the one fortification that can't be demolished by your
opponent's military units! Only villagers can chop down trees, and
how likely is your enemy to send them in first?
