Age of Empires II (Age of Kings) - Hints

Play to Your Strength - When you pick your civilization, pay
attention to your team bonus, and make sure you play to your
strength. It's easy to remember to use your Cavalry when you're
playing the Mongols, or your Archers when you're battling the
Britons, but don't forget the more subtle advantages in hunting,
farming, and so on.

Protect Your Stationary Defenses - Don't sit back idly behind your
walls and towers; your stationary defenses must be actively
protected from enemy siege equipment. Make sure you build plenty
of gates so you can quickly respond with armed forays in any
direction, and be prepared to send out infantry or hard-hitting
Cavalry units to wipe out the battering rams and trebuchets that
will be coming your way.

Ring Out the Alarm - If your town is under attack, select the Town
Center and click the Bell icon (or press H, then B); all your
Villagers will then seek shelter in the nearest Town Center or
Tower (not Outpost). Each Villager inside a building will
contribute to that building's defense. Thus, it's always a very
good idea to build a Tower or two next to any group of working
Villagers. Not only will the Tower fight enemy units, but also it
will protect (and heal) any units stationed inside.
