BALDUR'S GATE HINTS From Stefan Herber Having completed the game but probably never getting on top of the control system for combat I can only offer these hints to people finding it hard going: a) Make sure you always have a full party even if you don't plan to keep all the characters or are intent on having an all good or all evil membership. Combat is much easier with 5 rather than 2 players! b) A thief is an absolute necessity. On the later levels traps are very frequent and nobody else can disarm them. c) The wand of animal summoning is a splendid item - it's possible to kill all the baddies using it frequently enough. Even with the add-on pack this was effectively all I needed to complete the final section. Make sure you have as many as possible in your inventory as you can afford - and reserve their use for the more difficult enemies. d) I'm not sure whether paladins are of any value at all. Their magic is weak and they have a lot of problems learning new spells. It may be easier here having a strong fighter with no magic abilities although my primary character was a paladin. Maybe I've been playing M&M for too long. e) The best party? Undoubtedly a fighter/ranger/thief/wizard/cleric. But you knew I was going to say that.. f) Cultivate and recultivate ranged weapon skill. If I learnt nothing else from M&M I learnt that. It's absolutely vital and the only way you will get through certain fights. g) Good luck! I wish the game had been everything I was hoping for but it wasn't. Now it's on to other challenges. - o -
