Letters @~Any letters or e-mails received on an adventuring-related topic @~may be reprinted in here unless marked 'not for publication'. ------------------------------------------------------------------ @~First two web recommendations from: Jenny Perry, Hampton, by email The adventure website for mrbill is http://userdata.acd.net/mrbill/ Hope you enjoy the site. CD Access is brilliant for buying the games that never see the light of day over here. @~I already knew about CD Access at http://www.cdaccess.com - they @~do have a very good range of software and fast service. I @~checked out Mr Bill's Adventure Site - he has reviews, new @~games, kids' games, a few walkthroughs etc. There's a useful @~comprehensive list of commercial adventure and RPG software, old @~and new, with a one or two line precis in some cases. You can @~also visit a message board. ------------------------------------------------------------------ @~And one from: Neal Medley, Felixstowe, by email Have you tried www.blackstar.co.uk ? I order most of my DVDs and videos through them because pre-orders have a 20% discount, and, unlike Amazon, there's no postage to pay. They also do some good special offers, which are different to the ones you see in the shops. @~Their prices certainly seem very good and you can browse every @~video or DVD released in the UK. ------------------------------------------------------------------ @~During August, I had an interesting query from: John Tobin, by email Since I last accessed WITCHFINDER I have updated my O/S to Win 98 second edition. Now all I can get is message saying RUNTIME ERROR 200 AT 1AB5:0091. Any suggestions? @~I asked Bev, who was one of the authors of Wicthfinder and she @~said: Dorothy wrote an article (Probe, October '99) on the problems of running AGT games on newer, faster machines, and the gist of it is: "...that some machines are exactly 55 times faster than the one AGT source code was compiled on. This is a divide by zero error within the run-time engine, and has nothing to do with the game author. Therefore those of you with fast PCs may encounter a problem - the solution is to drop the speed of the machine with one of the many slow-down programs available. "(i.e. SLOWDOS, MO-SLO; I'm not sure about the spelling of these slow-down programs, but I know Sue offered one of them as a bonus on one of the SynTax disks not too long ago.) Dorothy also mentions that the problem might be solved by converting AGT games into AGiliTy; but I have my doubts about this method, as many old AGT games don't/won't "work" when converted - eg, "Jack of Hartz" converted, but there was something decidedly wrong in the playing of it under AGiliTy - several commands went haywire, and the game wouldn't function properly. Hope that solves the query - I don't think it's got anything to do with the Windows version installed (98, or 2000 or whatever), it seems more a problem with processor speed. So I guess the solution is to get SLODOS? SLOWDOS? or MOSLO; presumably downloadable from the Net. @~I sent a copy of MoSlo (from Disk 988) to John and asked him if @~it helped. I haven't heard from him yet. SlowDOS was given with @~issue 63. In the hopes that others of you might also find MoSlo @~useful, it's on this issue's disk. ------------------------------------------------------------------ @~Finally, just to prove I'm a twit! From Bill Jenkins, Cramlington I have printed out your solution of The Blackstone Chronicles, but find the drawings referred to in the text are missing. I wonder if they are available, as one of them is for an area in which I’ve been stuck for some time. @~I sent them to Bill, together with a section of a different @~solution which explained the three problems referred to in more @~detail. They are all also published in this issue. - o -
