Baldur's Gate Hints for combat by Julian Gregory I understand that several people, including myself, have been having great trouble with the combat in Baldur's Gate. This aspect of the game is not described very well in the manual. Having struggled for some time these are my tips which I hope will be of some use. 1. First of all turn the artificial intelligence off. This is the left of the two buttons at the far right of the screen. 2. Set the game to auto pause when either enemies are spotted or when a character is attacked. This will give you time to decide on your strategy for the upcoming fight. 3. Move the characters with the least amount of points to the back of the group. I only found out how to move characters by accident. Click on a portrait and drag the picture to where you want it be. 4. Equip as many as possible of your party with range weapons, bows, crossbows or slings. Even slings can be remarkably useful on occasions. 5. With AI turned off you can select each character individually and tell them what to do, whether to move, fire a ranged weapon or use a melee weapon. 6. Keep several healing potions and healing spells in the quick slots so that they can be readily available. 7. Don't forget that if you access your inventory screen during combat the game will not remain paused. 8. Remember, if a particular fight is becoming too difficult, there is no disgrace to retreating and regrouping. 9. Don't necessarily try to save all your characters every time. There are other NPCs in the game prepared to join should one of your party die. - o -
