The Peg-Leg Pete Project - updates 3 and 4 Zenobi Software Reviewed by Sue The Peg-Leg Pete Project first got a mention in SynTax #58 in a short article by John Wilson of Zenobi Software. But whereas the original CD was œ15 and updates œ5, these appear to be only œ2.99 each, a real bargain. The contents of both CDs are fascinating. I'll let The Balrog introduce them: Update 3 This time around we have put together a real strange collection for your pleasure. There is some neat 'clipart' for you to adorn your artistic creations with - some lovely pictures of various 'loading-screens', 'cassette-box covers' and other game-related 'art' to cast an eye over - an 'Amstrad' emulator and loads of games to try out on it (if you ever figure out how to get them loaded into it in the first place) - a pile of 'music' files for you to listen to (all of them game-related) - the last-ever issue of 'THE GOBLIN GAZZETTE' - a copy of the 'SHADES OF EVIL' booklet - a small collection of some 'Balrogian' short tales and vignettes - and last but not least a couple of games to keep you busy over the coming weeks. No matter what there is on this CD you will be sure to find that it is 'adventure-related' in some way or other and at times guaranteed to bring a tiny smile to your lips .... hope you enjoy it all. As Balrog said, the clip art varies from scanned covers, loading screens and screenshots of various computer games on many different formats, to logos and grabbed icons from Lords of Midnight and Doomdark's Revenge. Seen on their own, the characters look strangely like Lego men! Do you want games? An Amstrad folder has a CPC52 emulator and well over 100 adventure game disk images. Another called Games has folders for 8 Adventions TADS games (Unnkulia, Rylvania etc) and solutions to most of them, 15 Basic PC games and the three-parter, Tales of Treasure from John Olsen. There are more scanned covers etc in the Pictures folder. Roal and other stories by The Balrog are also scanned in and there are Acrobat files containing the Topologika manuals. There are also a couple of utilities - IView and JPEGview. The Mags section contains JPGs of the complete copy of the last Goblin Gazette scanned as individual pages as well as Frank Oliver's book Shades of Evil. If you're short of things to do, there are a load of Speccy programs and an emulator - GAC, PAW, Quill and more. Also on the CD is an HTML map of Doomdark's Revenge. Hmm, I'd never though of making an RPG map using tiles and HTML code ... it looks great but is slow to view and has the most longwinded code you've seen! Update 4 Again, over to The Balrog for an intro. Here is a small collection of 'Help-line', 'Tips' and 'Hints' pages from various magazines .. they might make some very interesting reading (if you are that way inclined). They were uncovered whilst clearing out the debris under the stairs and brought back many fond memories when reading through them. The various 'pics' can be viewed individually or collectively (a small viewer prog has been included in order to achieve this, so check it out). If you so wish the 'pages' can be printed out for future reference. Also on the CDROM are a number of little 'extras' in the form of a number of games (both ADVENTURE and ARCADE - more of the former and less of the latter) and the applications to play them with - read the various 'txt' files to learn more. There are also a couple of little utilities to play around with. Have fun and enjoy the 'memories'. So, there's not so much variety on this disk. The hints come from Computer and Video Games, PCW, Sinclair User and the CVG Book of Adventure. There is an emulator folder and one for games, some of the adventure ones being Lords of Midnight, The Mysterious Adventure range, all the Level 9s, and a folder containing over 100 Z80 emulated Speccy games. In conclusion, then, both CDs are good value for money with some great files included on them. Both also have some which I couldn't see any point in including, such as the animated graphics on Update 3. But you'll always get a few oddities in a varied collection like these ... and that's partly what makes it so much fun to dip into, like a bran tub. You never know what you're going to pull out.
