Sites and Downloads - August 2001 These are a few of the more interesting places I've visited on the Net this month - hope you find them interesting too ... Sue Cultures Screensaver - www.thq.co.uk/cultures Having started to play Cultures, I decided to visit their homepage and on one of the sections was a screensaver. It was quite large, over 6 MB and strictly speaking was designed to give people an idea of the style of the game before it was released. It shows the characters from the game wandering about over a series of different backgrounds. Quite fun to watch but nothing special. Aero Mouse - www.allbubblenosqeak.co.uk Vicky Campbell told me about the Aero site. At the time I hadn't even seen the advert, though I did soon after. If YOU haven't, you can download a movie file from the site. On the site, you can apply to adopt an Aero mouse. Well, he'd looked so miserable in the advert when he was rejected by the chap buying his 'bubbly chocolate' that I thought I ought to put my name down. It was about a week before I was emailed with an URL from which I could download my little mouse. (In between I was sent an email saying my application was 'being considered'!). The file is 1.24 meg in size so doesn't take too long to download. Saving the file to the Desktop, all you have to do then is double-click on it to run it. Your Aero mouse will then take over your Desktop, or whatever program you happen to be running (he even works over screensavers) as he wanders along the bottom of the screen, floats up on an Aero bubble or plays with his hula hoop, to name just a few things. Unbelievably cute. Heroes Chronicles Wallpaper - www.3do.com/products/pc/chronicles/downloads When I was looking for info on these games to put into SynTax, I checked out the downloads page and found four great wallpapers, one for each game. Each can be downloaded for PC or Mac. In the case of the PC, they are at either 800x600 or 1024x768 resolution. I went for the latter and they were downloaded as zip files of 1.3 meg or less. The actual wallpapers are closer to 2.5 meg each, unzipped. One shows a castle being attacked, another a fort manned by skeletons, a third a ship sailing into the distance and the fourth a snowy wasteland with a turretted castle (my favourite). Brilliant art work, and it will make your desktop look really special. Holodeck3 Desktop Theme v3.0 - http://w3.one.net/~smeghead Created and assembled by Smeghead, this is a set of desktop themes to use with Plus or any similar theme package. There are 8 in all, 4 each in 800x600 and 1024x768 resolution, one of each can be used with active desktop. The background makes your desktop look like the computers on the Enterprise and Voyager. There are start up and shut down screens and great sound effects, many using the Star Trek computer voice. There's even three new Star trek fonts and a load of icons. The whole package is of excellent quality. Star Trek fans, don't miss this. - o -
