The Interactive Fiction Archive Has Moved Information from John Ferris The Interactive Fiction Archive on ftp.gmd.de has closed. GMD is a German IT research company and the archive was created by Volker Blasius, an employee, in an effort to collect IF/Adventure related material in one central archive. Volker is now phasing into retirement, in Germany employees are able to reduce their working hours while still being guaranteed a percentage of their wage. This meant that he was no longer able to host the archive on GMD property. However, Stephen Granade (who has been doing all the archive maintenance for the last year) and David Kinder have taken over the Archive and it has a nice new home, the web home page of which is: http://ifarchive.org/index.html and it contains the following information. The main FTP site is: ftp://ftp.ifarchive.org/if-archive/ The HTTP (web based) mirrors are as follows: Mirror - Country http://mirror.ifarchive.org - USA http://wuarchive.wustl.edu/doc/misc/if-archive/ - USA http://ftp.ndn.net/mirrors/if-archive/ - USA http://www.planetmirror.com/pub/if-archive/ - Australia The ftp addresses for the mirrors are as follows: Mirror - Country ftp://ftp.ifarchive.com/if-archive/ - USA ftp://www.plover.net/if-archive/ - USA ftp://ftp.guetech.org/if-archive/ - USA ftp://mirror.holmoak.co.uk/if-archive/ - UK ftp://ftp.funet.fi/pub/misc/if-archive/ - Finland ftp://ftp.planetmirror.com/pub/if-archive - Australia From my experience, the main FTP site is quite fast; I noticed no real speed increase with the UK site. I was of course connecting from the UK. - o -
