Letters Any letters or e-mails received on an adventuring-related topic may be reprinted in here unless marked 'not for publication'. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Only one this issue, part of an email from: Carolyn Brown I was discussing RPGs with Richard at work the other day, and he was telling me about a website where you can download stuff to enable you to run Ultima7 and 8 in Windows. He also said that at least one group are re-writing some of the old Ultima games to bring them up to date. He couldn't remember the websites, but I found some at the weekend. There is www.peroxide.dk/ultima/ where they are attempting to re-write Ultima 1 as a 3D game - it sounds quite good - and www.twistsoft.co.uk which is attempting re-writes of Ultima Underworld 1 & 2, with more up to date graphics. It all sounds quite fascinating, as I'd love to replay the Underworld games, but couldn't do it on my machine as I don't have a Dos sound card. These sites all have links to one another and there is lots of Ultima info. It's good to see that so much is going on still with these venerable games, which have virtually passed into the public domain, so I suppose that providing they are treated with respect there won't be too much objection to their being updated. I'd love a decent RPG again. @~Alex mentioned the new Ultima 1 in his News section a few issues @~ago but I hadn't heard about the Underworld games. Never @~completed either of those. I remember I had problems with @~jumping from one pillar to another in one of them. I completed @~Ultima 1 when I had an older PC but it'll be interesting to see @~what they've done with it. I went onto their site to download @~the demo but they're working on a new version and the old one @~has been taken down. I'll find out more by next issue. - o -
