Asheron's Call - hints Attack From a Distance Using a bow or distance spells can be a useful death-avoiding tactic, especially for a new character. Be sure and give your character some way of affecting damage on monsters from a distance to wear them down before they close on you. Don't Knock the Tutorial Be sure to go through the Tutorial Dungeon until you're comfortable with the keyboard and the interface. The Target Monsters in there will give you a little experience, and you'll receive a useful item at the end. Equip Yourself Before heading out into the wilderness, purchase the best armor and weapons that you can afford. Don't hoard your starting money; it'll be much more advantageous to have better protection against a Phyntos Wasp than an extra few pyreals. Keep a Death Item Handy It's a good idea to keep a "death item" (a high-cost item with little value to you personally) or two on your person to sacrifice to the gods of Dereth the next time you expire. While you can lose more than your most powerful item when you die, if you have a death item, you're less likely to lose the items you really care about. Keep an Eye on Your Coordinates When venturing far from towns or in potentially hazardous areas, always have the map screen open (press F10 to bring it up). Keep an eye on your coordinates, especially when you're in combat. If you die, jot down the location where you died so you can find your corpse and loot it. Autorun, Forrest, Autorun! Dereth is huge, monstrous, gigantic. When you're getting from one place to another, you'll want to run. It gets old holding down the move forward arrow, so get to know the Autorun key (Q by default). Autorun can be a good way to flee from combat while typing a message, but you won't be able to change direction while typing, so make sure you have a clear path to dash. - o -
