Brass Lantern - Website News From John Ferris After the changes to the Interactive Fiction archive comes another change to a famous adventure web site. Since 1997 Stephen Granade has edited a well-respected adventure column on the Mining Company site which became About.com a year or so ago. The original aim of what became About.com was to provide a web site with regularly changing content on many subjects, such as hobbies, science, law computing, religion and even computer games. Essentially, they paid people like Stephen to produce regular content so that the site could generate income through advertising. It's the standard "honey pot" concept of advertising in popular places, magazines, newspapers, TV, Radio and the like. Stephen provided a regular and wide ranging update on the Internet world of Interactive Fiction until About.com pulled the plug on him and many other sites deemed to be so unpopular as not to be profitable. I've heard this story in an adventure context before. Stephen has returned with: http://brasslantern.org This site is run by Stephen alone and again provides wide- ranging coverage on all things IF/Adventure related. Like his former site, you can subscribe to an email newsletter as well. And not an advert in sight. - o -
