Journey to Pompeii - Part 2 Solution by Peter Clark Concluded from Issue 75 Day Three - August 22nd 79 A.D. You begin Day Three facing the room with the small pool in Popidius's House. Walk forward to the three people standing in the doorway across the room. Popidius wants you to check out just what Fructus is up to with his "End of the world is nigh" sign on the donkey in the street. Go left but keep moving forward quickly when someone shouts out at you to stop. If you aren't quick enough, a tile from the roof will fall on you and end the game. Assuming that you have survived, you will now be at the perfume shop again. Ascula will give you a red rose in appreciation for increasing her trade. Outside the shop, turn right to see two men. Talk to the man who is wearing the red trimmed robe on the right. Aedile Helvius wants you to prove that is wasn't you who painted the "End is nigh" sign for Fructus. Turn left and talk to Ascula again. She will tell Helvius that she will act in your defence. Turn around and talk to the painter in his shop. Fructus is definitely the culprit! There's no doubt about it. Turn left and talk with the owner of the donkey again. Helvius believes that Fructus is your accomplice. Marcus now arrives and intercedes with Helvius on your behalf. Marcus will now take you to the Palestra for a bit of javelin practice. He tells you that he believes that Helvius, who was Secundus's rival in the recent election, might be behind the graffiti incident with the prostitutes. Inside the Palestra, walk over to the right and down the right hand side of the pool. You will see a javelin in the ground. Pick it up and practice throwing it towards the wall. Don't let Marcus have it or you will end up killing someone! Have a few throws then take the rose from your inventory and attach it to the javelin then throw it towards the crater of Vesuvius which you will see over the wall near where Marcus is standing. You will now see a video clip where the javelin lands close to Sophia in the garden. Now turn right, go forward and leave the Palestra through the middle of the three doors. Go forward and to the left. You should hear a voice calling you. Turn towards the Amphitheatre and you should find Locusta hiding beneath the stairs. Talk to her about everything. She will give you the two philtres that she promised you. One can be used to convince Sophia that she must leave with you. You must use this one only when she is alone with you. The other will knock someone out if they come between you and Sophia. Locusta will ask you to rescue Fructus who has been taken into custody. She is afraid that Helvius will beat Fructus when he arrives to investigate. When you have finished talking with Locusta, go forward around the perimeter of the amphitheatre. It should take two clicks before you encounter the guard who is holding Fructus. Talk to him, but when he asks whether you are a Gallic Magnus, say NO. When you finish talking to him, go forward to the iron gateway and talk to Fructus. Whatever you do, don't say YES when he asks you to speak to the guard on his behalf. Turn around and leave the cell and do not talk to the guard again or he will put you in the cell with Fructus! From outside the cell, standing near the guard, turn right and go around the perimeter of the amphitheatre back towards where you met with Locusta. On the fourth click forward, you should meet up with a young man and Palmyra, the prostitute. Talk to Palmyra and she will agree to distract the aedile that is guarding Fructus. She will now leave. Talk to the young gladiator, Pyrame. You may not be able to complete all the conversation topics but that doesn't matter, the result will be the same. When you are finished talking with Pyrame, turn around and go up the steps to the amphitheatre. Pyrame will follow you. At the top, turn around and go forward. Turn right and enter the arena. Cross to the doorway on the opposite side of the arena and click on the gate to pick it up. Now turn around and click the gate on Pyrame. He will then break down the gate for you. Go forward once and turn right. You will see Fructus hanging on the wall. Do not talk to him or touch the square stone that sticks out from the wall or the game will come to a premature ending. Instead, use your knife to cut Fructus down from the wall. He and Pyrame will follow you. Quickly return to the arena and go back across to the other side. Turn left and leave the arena. Immediately turn right and go down the right hand steps to the Plaza. Now, if you feel like it, you can return to the Tavern and play another game of Tali with Pyrame. This is not necessary to finish the game. If you have returned to the Tavern, you must now find Octavius's house. From the Tavern, go left three times then turn right. You should now be in front of his house. Enter the house and talk to Statius. Ask for Sophia. He will not let you see her so ask about Lavinia. Again he will lie and tell you that she is out near the Euripe. Ignore this remark ands go forward past him, through the house and into the garden. In the central pathway you will find Sophia. Talk to her about Habinnas who thinks only about money. She will consent to leave with you eventually, but only if Lavinia gives her consent. At this point, check your inventory. You should now have a Nightingale. Look down at Sophia's feet. There is a hot spot there. Take the Tali Dice from your inventory and throw them there. Sophia will ask you why you need to leave in such a hurry. Take the magic philtre (1) from your inventory and use it on the small fountain to your right. You and she will see a vision of the coming disaster in Pompei. Sophia promises to meet you by the garden gate the following night after the feast of Vulcanalia. That is, if she can get Lavinia's consent. Day Four - August 23rd 79 A.D. Morning finds you in Popidius's house. Turn right and speak with him. He needs your help. Sylphium is needed for the feast and the cook has none. He also wants you to arrange the evening's entertainment. Go right, forward, forward and left back into the street. Go right and you should meet the owner of the mule. He wants to sell it to you. Accept his offer then go left and forward along the Street of Abundance three times. Turn right and enter the Tavern again. Talk to Dionysus to gather information about the lack of sylphium and the entertainment preferences. Ask him about Fructus then go into the back room. Talk to Pyrame and ask him everything. He will agree to leave Pompeii with you. Go back to the street and turn left. Go forward four times and turn right to face Ascula's perfume shop. Here you see your friend, the donkey. Talk to Ascula about everything. She will suggest that you find Locusta. Tell her that she should leave Pompeii and ask her where you might find Locusta. She mentions the Triangular Forum. When you have finished talking to her, leave the shop and use your map to find the Temple of Isis. Enter the Temple and cross the grass to where Locusta is standing by the steps. Talk to her and she will ask you to get a branch from the tree for her. Save your game here! To the right of Locusta there are some stones. (The next few moves must be completed quickly or you will die.) Pick up a stone and throw it at the tree where you see the hot spot. Quickly, pick up the branch and place it where you picked up the stone as you have uncovered a snake. The snake will wind itself around the branch. Pick up the branch, turn around and throw it behind the tree to the left or right. Now give Locusta the branch. She will now tell you where you might get some sylphium. There is some hidden in a small pot in the Temple of Isis. She will give you her papyrus if you promise to get her and Fructus out of the city safely. After you finish talking to Locusta, turn left and then enter the temple walkway. Along the walkway you will find Helvius who is Secundus' political rival and your nemesis, standing in front of a door. Talk to him. When he rushes off in pursuit of Fructus, enter through the door into the theatre. Go forward and loom left and down at the seating tiers. Pick up the mask and coat on one tier and then go across to the opposite tier and pick up the Capsa (with lines and costumes.) Now turn and go up the steps in front of the stage. Talk to the actor, Pyladius, on the stage. He is in need of a replacement for a missing actor, Publius. It seems that Fructus's talents might be of use here! Leave the stage and go left and forward out of the theatre. Turn right and go forward, left and forward to exit to the street. Turn right and go forward twice. Turn left and go forward twice more. Turn right and go forward four times. Turn right and enter the Bakery. Talk to Sotericus, the baker about not having a delivery person for the baked goods that must go to the theatre, stale bread for the actors. Go into the back of the bakery and find Fructus hiding behind a pillar on the left. Talk to him about his "big break" and ask him to go to Locusta and wait for you. He needs a disguise to pretend that he is Sotericus' delivery boy. Look around and find a disguise. In the back of the bakery, where the donkey is you will find the flour covered fabric on the base of the grindstone. Get this and give it to Fructus. He will now leave. You must now return to the Triangular Forum. Leave the bakery and go left, forward four times, left, forward twice, right, forward twice and enter the Temple of Isis. Now go left, forward, right, forward left and you should be facing Locusta and Fructus at the temple door. They will follow you inside. Go up on the stage and talk to Pyladius, the actor, again. With the addition of Fructus and Locusta in his troupe, he will consent to stay and provide the entertainment for the banquet. You agree to meet at the Stables Gate before dawn so that you can all flee together from the city. Leave the theatre and turn right. Go back out to the entrance. Turn right in the street and go forward once. Turn right and enter the door to the Temple of Isis. Talk to the priest about sylphium and the entertainment. Give the papyrus to the priest and, when he asks you about the books, answer, "Book Three." When he leaves, go right and forward into the back room. Move the small palm plant on the right. The sylphium is under it. Take the round box that contains it and leave the Temple. Now you are ready to talk to Popidius again. He is at home so go right, forward, left, forward, right, forward into his house. Go forward through the room and out of the door on the right, around the corner. Go forward once and turn left to see Popidius. Go forward and then turn right. Now you can give him the sylphium. You will now be taken to the kitchen. Talk to the cook and you will be presented with a three part guessing game. You have to identify tonight's menu by solving his riddles. Pick the dishes up from the table as you see them and answer as follows: - Part One 1. Mussels 2. Eggs 3. Tuna Part Two 1. Dugs 2. Duck. Part Three 1. Oysters 2. Dulcia 3. Dates After your success in identifying the items for the feast, talk to Popidius again. He will ask you to go and get five fish for the sacrifice to Vulcan. Turn right and go forward down the outer walkway. Turn right at the corner and go forward once. Turn right to see the sunken pool. Go forward to the pool and look to see red goldfish. Click on the pool to collect five fish that you should then take back to Popidius. He will then make his sacrifice to Vulcan. In the next scene, you appear at night. The feast is now over and you are in position just outside Octvius' garden gate. Save your game here. Quickly click the nightingale from your inventory on the gate then turn left through ninety degrees and take a step forward. Failure to complete this move quickly will result in your being hit by a stone and killed. Now you must follow Statius, the arrogant servant, who guards Octavious' door. He is difficult to see in the darkness so go right, forward, right, forward to the Street of Abundance. Now turn left and then go forward five times. Turn left again and then go forward once. You should hear a sound. Turn around quickly through 180 degrees and take one step back towards the intersection. You will ambush nasty Statius. When he is subdued, talk to him about Sophia. He will tell you that he has kidnapped her and hidden her somewhere where you won't find her. Take Philtre No.2 from your inventory and use it on him. This will knock him out for a while. Turn right from here and go forward twice to where you can see the Temple of Isis. Enter the Temple and keep going towards the Temple ruins where you met Locusta earlier. When you have gone clear across the temple floor, turn right and you should see Sophia. Go forward and turn right. Rescue her by cutting her bonds with your knife. In the next scene, you are in the street outside Popidius' house with a grateful Sophia. You have warned everyone you could about the coming eruption and it is just about to occur. It's now time for you to run for safety. Give the mask and cloak to Sophia and offer her the donkey as a ride. Turn left and then turn around again completely and head for the Stables Gate. When you get there, one of Helvius' guards is there and he recognises you. Talk to him until you have convinced him that you are with the group of actors that just left through the gate. Give him either the Capsa or Philtre No.2. This will distract him long enough for you to pass through the gate to safety. You will now see the closing scene of the destruction of Pompeii and end the game. - o -
