Goofs in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999) Incorrectly regarded as goofs: All claimed inconsistencies with the original trilogy are being rejected until the prequel trilogy is complete, as they may be explained in episodes II and III. Continuity: The shadows that the battle-droids leave on the ground when escorting the captured Queen across the courtyard do not match the shot from above just before the Jedi Knights leap down to rescue them. Continuity: During the final fight scene between Darth Maul and Obi-Wan, as Obi-Wan leaps up and summons Qui-Gon's light sabre to his hand, Darth Maul is holding his sabre in his right hand. A fraction of a second later, Obi-Wan is going over Darth Maul's head, and Darth's sabre has jumped to his left hand. Revealing mistakes: In the end scene where the queen hands the glowing globe to Boss Nass, she is looking at the ground and in the other direction. Continuity: After R2D2 repairs the shield generator, there is a scene where Padme is cleaning up the droid and talking to Jar Jar. In the last shot of this scene, the film is reversed (mirror image) - notable by looking at R2D2's features. Continuity: On Tattooine when Qui-gon brings the hyperdrive back to the ship he speaks with Obi-Wan whose Paduwan braid is on the wrong side of his head. Incorrectly regarded as goofs: When Obi Wan is hanging in the pit after the fight with Maul, he looks at Qui-Gon's light saber, trying to focus. While he is several feet under the platform and facing the opposite direction, there's no reason to think he needs to be looking towards it. Continuity: Anakin takes C3PO's eye in his right hand. Transfers it to the left hand. Starts to put the eye on its place. In the very next shot he puts the eye there, but with the right hand. Incorrectly regarded as goofs: When Queen Amidala goes to The Council, the man she speaks to seems to have tusks, but one of them shakes as if it is actually made out of rubber. Obviously this is actually some soft alien organ that merely happens to look like the tusks of some Earthly animals. Continuity: In the scene when Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan are talking to Jar Jar when they first arrive on Naboo, Obi-Wan's hair is wet. When Jar Jar spins around and Obi-Wan is forced to duck, his hair suddenly becomes dry. In the next shot it is wet again. Revealing mistakes: A power cord can be seen along the floor powering the lights on Queen Amidala's dress when she is looking out the window of the palace at the invading army. Revealing mistakes: As Qui-Gon, Padme, and R2 enter Anakin Skywalker's home Qui-gon introduces himself to Anakin's mother. As Qui-Gon says, "I'm Qui-Gon Jinn," Padme mouths these same words. This might not be visible in the pan and scan version of the film. Continuity: Several times, during the fight scene in the Theed Hangar, the Droidekas are shown shooting, but no lasers are coming out of their guns. Audio/visual unsynchronised: When Darth Maul and Obi-Wan are fighting at the end of the film, Darth Maul hits Obi-Wan's light saber 3 times but there are 4 clashing sounds. This happened just a minute or two after Obi started fighting Darth Maul when the force field went down. Incorrectly regarded as goofs: During the fight in the palace, the queen uses a gun without an ascension attachment. When she climbs out onto the ledge, she has one, but a security guard dressed in red was seen unclipping a spare gun just before. Incorrectly regarded as goofs: When Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon are having their initial stand-off with the battle droids, they both decide to run amazingly fast down the corridor. Yet when Qui- Gon is fighting Darth Maul, Obi-Wan runs at a normal pace and can't manage to beat the energy doors to help his Jedi Master. He knows the high speed run would leave him too drained to mount an effective attack. Incorrectly regarded as goofs: The battle droids have a limited amount of local autonomy, but given the Empire's love of centralized control, it's not a huge surprise that they all fail when that central control is lost, even if it's obviously not a great strategy; remember that the Empire doesn't believe that their control centers can be destroyed, a fact that gets taught to them anew with each movie. Continuity: Obi-Wan's hair length and style changes between shots, starting when Amidala returns from Coruscant. It goes from spiky to smooth and back once or twice. Continuity: During the fight over and around the droid control ship, Anakin says to R2D2, "I'll try spinning, that's a good trick." Anakin is seen to turn the flight controls to the left, but his craft spins to his right. In an earlier scene (right after the auto pilot is disconnected) Anakin says, "Let's go left," turns the controls to the left, and the scene tilts to Anakin's left, showing that the controls are working backwards in one of the two scenes. - o -
