Spellcasting Sound Problems

I've just finished Spellcasting 201, on my new PC strangely enough,
but had to install and run it without sound. I had a problem with
the game crashing if I did something wrong and the graduation nymph
turned up to tell me off if I entered a class I was not registered
for or tried to leave the campus without a pass.  However, I could
clear the error message and then Click to open the game window and
continue playing.  The odd thing is that if the nymph turned up to
tell me I'd just achieved another level I had no problems.  My
sound problem with S201 was not confined to my new XP box, I had
problems when I played it on my old P266 with its more recent
soundcard. In fact I had problems with S101 on the old box also.
I'm currently playing S301, on the new box, without the sound
installed and it plays OK.  I've not played enough of the Legend
titles to give more that the general advice not to install sound.
