Letters Any letters or e-mails received on an adventuring-related topic may be reprinted in here unless marked 'not for publication'. ------------------------------------------------------------------ @~First, an email from Nick Edmunds, Worcester Continuing the theme of Windows XP experiences I recently discovered that many of my batch files will not run in XP as it contains very few DOS commands. I appreciate that not many others will be using batch files any more, but I see implications here with regard to older games. The minimum spec. for XP requires a fairly pokey machine and, as ever with the latest operating system, there is not a great deal of support for older hardware. With this in mind it may well be worth keeping hold of that old PC simply for specific tasks, be it playing older games, data backup or controlling older peripherals. In these instances you may wish to connect the two machines for data transfer. Fortunately the Windows family does make it quite straight forward to network two machines with hardware options available from œ10 - œ50. @~XP is still my secondary O/S, only used when I need to so I @~still haven't had any incompatibility problems yet. ----------------------------------------------------------------- @~Next one from David Stocks, Edinburgh Well, it is now the second week with broadband. It is amazing as you surf around how quickly the pages load. It is great for streaming video and things - at last I can watch them without the stutter. You can also listen to Internet radio and surf at the same time. All in all it is probably worth the extra œ10 a month, although it is really a bit of a toy. The only thing wrong is that I have been ambling around the web so much that adventuring/RPGing has fallen behind a bit. @~I can imagine! Since going onto Freeserve Anytime I've been @~online more but speedwise it leaves a lot to be desired. @~Broadband next for me too ... ----------------------------------------------------------------- @~And finally some info taken from a phone call from Andy Stenhouse, Kirkcaldy Andy rang to tell me that there is a bug in the second chapter of Simon the Sorcerer 3D which makes it crash at a certain point. There is a patch for it, available through the Internet, but you must install it before you start playing, otherwise your save games won't work. @~Come on, send in your letters and comments for next issue! They @~can be on any relevant topic. - o -
