Letters Any letters or e-mails received on an adventuring-related topic may be reprinted in here unless marked 'not for publication'. ------------------------------------------------------------------ @~The first one this issue is part of an email from Peter Clark, Manchester I see in SynTax that there is a mention of problems with Simon 3D. I have had a problem with getting the game to run but have solved it now and the following might help someone else. I am using a Voodoo 3000 AGP video card and I found that, although the game would install, it would not run, just gave an error message. Enquiry of the manufacturer produced a lot of useless information but, as there was a patch available for the game, I downloaded it. Still no joy but the readme file that came with it mentioned the error message about rendering that I was getting. I reset the video card to 16 bit colour and hey presto it worked! I am enclosing a copy of that file for your use. It may help someone else. @~See the Articles section. I've added the patch to one of @~the SynTax CDs too ... Sue ------------------------------------------------------------------ And to finish, part of another email, this time from Laurence Creighton, South Africa with some words of warning. I'm still an avid adventurer, I recently completed "Indian Jones and the Infernal Machine" which is totally awesome. Five stars to the team who wrote it. The puzzles, the graphics, were tops, as were the story-line and continuity. An important thing is it is not Windows 98 compatible. After many emails flying back and forth from tech support, I found a patch on Lucas Arts website for it. I emailed these "techs" and told them they maybe should see what's on their own site! Duh. Maybe you could advise your readers about this. And worse, if you install the patch after you have started the game, previous saves will not work. It warns you so on the readme. I tried; it failed. They're right!! So I had to restart from the bloody beginning. I'm swearing and cursing at a game I picked up in a 2nd hand store called "The City of Lost Children". It's pathetic, slow, bad graphics, and worse: I can't get my teeth onto it. I really can't think what to do next. I have the walkthrough, but detest looking, as my eyes will probably see something more than I want. But I may have to relent... Adventures in SA are as rare as hens' teeth. All the stores now hold only sport games and strategy game. 2nd Hand stores keep whatever they can, and I go to them regularly, sometimes lucky. @~I also use a secondhand software shop, Computer Exchange. I find @~them very good and I like rummaging on the shelves for goodies. @~I also get some software in Makro out of their bargain bins and, @~of course, there's Ebay ... Sue - o -
