Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - Emissary Author JM Dillard Read by Nana Visitor Review by Sue This is where it all began, the first story set on Deep Space Nine, a space station set near the planet Bajor. Bajor had been held under military occupation by the Cardassians for the last 60 years but is now achieving independence with help from the Federation. Benjamin Sisko takes over as Commander of the station. Some of the Bajorans don't want him to be there but he'd rather be somewhere else too. A few years before, his spaceship had been caught up in an important battle at the planet Wolf 359 against the Borg where the Borg were trying to reach Earth. During the battle his wife Jennifer was killed, his son Jake injured and his ship destroyed. Part of Ben Sisko died too that day, and he was left feeling bitter, especially against Jean Luc Picard. He had been Captain of the Enterprise at the time of the battle and had been captured by the Borg who turned him into one of them. Not only had he been their mouthpiece, he'd been able to give them specialist information about Star Fleet's strength and weaknesses. In his heart, Sisko held him responsible for Jennifer's death. When he arrives at the station, Sisko is already making plans to leave, but becomes drawn into the life of the place and especially its religion. This also brings him into conflict with the Cardassians, especially when a stable worm hole is discovered which leads to a far part of the galaxy which would be of vital economic importance. Will the Cardassians still want to give up Bajor and DS9? As the first story in the series, Emissary introduces the major regular characters including Sisko and Jake, Kira Nerys (Nan Visitor who also reads the tape), shapeshifter Odo, Dax, Bashir, Quark and O'Brien. The story is well read and includes the usual sound effects to enhance it. - o -
